Early life of the girl in red
The real name of the girl in red is Mary Ulven, born on February 16, 1999 in Horten, Norway. She grew up in a quiet town, which she described in an interview as “quiet and a little boring.” She and her sisters were raised by divorced parents, her father was a policeman, and her mother worked in the technology industry.
Mary’s early exposure to music came from her grandfather, who played guitar and piano. Although she grew up without musical instruments in her home, her grandfather’s influence sparked her interest in music. In high school, she initially wanted to be a teacher, but at the age of 14, her life took a turn and turned to music.
In 2012, Marie received her first guitar as a Christmas gift from her grandfather. Although she initially lost interest in music and took up fingerstyle skateboarding, a hobby in which she rode mini skateboards, in 2013 she rediscovered her passion for music thanks to her grandfather. Marie taught herself piano, guitar and music production, and in 2015 she began composing and releasing Norwegian music on SoundCloud under the stage name “Lydia X”.
This laid the foundation for her foray into the music industry, which eventually led to the creation of the indie pop project “Girl In Red”.
