Guilty Gear Endeavor gameplay

Guilty Gear Strive is described as a “complete rebuild of the series” while retaining its core essence. It introduces various improved features and mechanics, including the removal of the series’ iconic instant kill mechanic. One notable addition is the “Wall Break” feature, which allows for phase transitions when initiating combos in the corners of the arena.

Development of the game was confirmed by Arc System Works during EVO 2018, and was officially announced at EVO 2019 with a trailer under the working title “New Guilty Gear.” The trailer showcases the game’s new Unreal Engine 4 graphics and wall-breaking mechanics. Shortly after, the theme song “Smell of the Game” was released as a promotional single. The final title of the game, Guilty Gear Strive, was revealed in a trailer in November 2019.

Director Akira Katano said the team’s intention was to make Guilty Gear Strive’s gameplay more accessible to a wider audience, rather than making it easier overall. The goal is to address the challenge of spectators and casual players struggling to understand high-level play and subsequently losing interest in watching or improving.

Notably, the game’s tutorial lacks detailed explanations of the mechanics, proving that players can still enjoy fighting games without extensive knowledge of combat mechanics. Additionally, the game’s online play does not include a ranked mode, allowing players to play at their own pace rather than constantly facing off against more skilled opponents.
