exciting history

Originally the Hip Hop World Awards, The Headies was founded by Ayo Animashaun and has a long history in the Nigerian music scene. Its unique plaque, designed by Matthias Aragbada and produced by Jide Adewoye, symbolizes the struggle and talent of the young artist.

In 2008, it was transformed and plated with 21-karat gold, composed of resin, copper, steel, marble and gold. As of 2018, there are 25 categories, and most winners are selected through public voting, with the exception of select categories such as Record of the Year and Best Rap Album. The Headies remains a renowned platform for celebrating excellence in Nigerian music.
