Released on Nintendo Switch in 2022, Splatoon 3 is the latest entry in Nintendo’s third-person shooter series. Following Splatoon 2, the game combines online multiplayer battles (player versus player and player versus environment) with an engaging single-player campaign centered around ink combat.
The game was unveiled in a trailer on February 17, 2021, and was released on September 9, 2022. Splatoon 3 received positive reviews for its new maps, single-player storyline, customization features, and overall gameplay mechanics.
However, the game was criticized for matchmaking issues and occasional disconnections, as well as a lack of new content. Despite these criticisms, Splatoon 3 has been a notable success, with sales of 11.71 million copies worldwide as of December 31, 2023.
The outstanding performance made it the fastest-selling game in the Splatoon series and one of the best-selling games on Nintendo Switch.
Splatoon 3 Gameplay
Splatoon 3, like its predecessor, is a third-person shooter in which players take on the role of Inklings or Octolings, using a variety of weapons that use colored ink as ammunition. These weapons resemble everyday objects, including a roller with a wide range of ink coverage for close-quarters combat, and a charger similar to a sniper rifle for long-range attacks.
Splatoon 3 introduces new primary, secondary, and special weapons, providing players with a variety of options. The player’s chosen primary weapon can be paired with a secondary weapon to perform additional secondary attacks that consume ink, while special weapons require ink to be covered in ink to recharge.

Inklings and Octolings can transform into a squid or octopus form, the so-called “swim form”, which allows them to climb walls and travel through ink faster. Weapons have limited ink, which can be quickly replenished by dipping into the ink in swim form. Splatoon 3 retains all the basic weapons from previous games, providing players with an enhanced and diverse combat experience.
Splatoon 3 Plot
In Splatoon 3, players are recruited by the elderly squid Craig Cuttlefish as Agent 3 to traverse the dangerous craters of Fuzzy Ooze. They team up with their pet Salmonid Smallfry to fight against fur-mutated Octarian enemies who have stolen Splatsville’s energy source, the Great Zapfish.
After a battle with Octarian leader DJ Octavio, the ground breaks open, revealing the underground city of Alterna, which has been transformed into an Octarian base. Agent 3 meets Callie, Marie, and the first game’s protagonist, Captain. While searching for Cuttlefish, they encounter idol group Deep Cut, mistaking them for treasure hunters.
It is revealed that Mr. Grizz, the CEO of Grizzco, has kidnapped Cuttlefish and plans to use Fuzzy Ooze to transform life into mammals, endangering the Earth. Deep Cut reveals their charitable intentions and joins forces with Splatoon to thwart Mr. Grizz’s plans for destruction.
Despite the challenges, Agent 3 defeats Mr. Grizzly with the help of his allies and saves the Earth, bringing the giant electric fish back to life. The squid is resurrected, and Mr. Grizzly is seen floating in space during the end credits.
