Tekken 8
Tekken 8 is a fighting game developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Arika, released on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. As the eighth canon and tenth installment in the Tekken series, the game’s story mode is titled “Dark Awakening” and takes place six months after the release of its predecessor.

The game revolves around the final conflict between the protagonists Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama, who tries to end the family chaos by defeating Kazuya. There are 32 characters in the game, both new and familiar, and each of them contributes to the overall story. The game’s development was first revealed at Evo 2022 in August 2022, and was officially shown at Sony’s State of Play in September.
Developed with Unreal Engine 5, Tekken 8 emphasizes an aggressive tone and upgrades the combat elements of the previous game. It introduces new mechanisms such as the “heat” system and “tornado” strikes, and adds an online mode “arcade mission” that provides tournaments, arcade functions, and customizable avatars.
Tekken 8 was playtested in July and October 2023 to ensure the game’s stability before a demo was released on consoles in December. The game’s first season pass, which includes downloadable content and new characters, was available during pre-order. The game was released to critical acclaim, praising the series’ progression and radical gameplay, with some publications praising Tekken 8 as the best entry since Tekken 3.

Tekken 8 Gameplay
Tekken 8 is a fighting game like its predecessor, but with some exciting changes. Producer Katsuhiro Harada mentioned that the game will be more aggressive than its predecessor. They introduced a new feature called “Heat”, which gives characters additional moves and changes the way some moves work.

It rewards players who are aggressive on offense instead of just on defense. When a character is in “Heat” they deal shred damage and have new moves. If a character uses certain moves, the “Heat” timer stops. Some technical updates include changes to the “Rage” system, now called “Heat Smash”. The “Spiral” mechanic was replaced with the “Tornado” extender, and when an opponent falls quickly they are in a special state.
Some levels have hazards, such as breakable walls and floors, or explosives that will blow your opponents away. Tekken 8 aims to create a more cinematic experience, emphasizing level destruction and character reactions. All character models and sounds are brand new and not copied from previous games.
The online mode features an “Arcade Mission” lobby for battles and tournaments, allowing players to customize their avatars with “Fight Money”. TEKKEN 8 uses the advanced Unreal Engine 5, making it the first major fighting game to use the engine. Excitingly, TEKKEN 8 introduces cross-platform play, allowing players on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S to play together for the first time in the series’ history. Cross-platform play can be turned on or off based on player preference.
