How to make a better chopping axe in Pax Dei
If you’ve ever been in a situation where a tree is “too hard” to chop with your axe, the only solution is to craft a better axe. These items actually have some properties, and the ones you’re looking for are the ones that have the lumberjack property.

The first level chopping axes, the Gneiss Chopping Axes, have no properties, so they are basically the baseline for chopping down trees. Once you unlock the weapon smithing bench, you will see some new weapons and tools available for crafting.
The best axe for chopping trees is the Iron Axe, which requires 1 Long Wooden Handle and 1 Iron Axe Head. You can craft an Iron Axe using a Stone Anvil. The Iron Axe has a Block rating of 5, a Wood Cutting rating of 6, and a Chopping rating of 7.
If you don’t have the materials to craft it, you can choose to forge a battle axe or a sturdy axe. Both items have more woodcutting properties than the basic chopping axe, and you can also use them in combat.
It takes hundreds of iron ores to make any of these items, so you’ll want to prioritize making a furnace. You’ll also want to get as much charcoal as possible so you can smelt all that iron ore into iron ingots. If you build your base near a mountain, that’s no problem. It’s one of the best places for beginners to start due to its abundant supply of iron ore.
How to make a better pickaxe in Pax Dei
For the Mining Pickaxe, there is only one option, and that is the Iron Pickaxe. You will need 1 Long Wooden Handle and 2 Iron Ingots, which is much easier to craft than the Iron Chopping Axe’s ingredients. However, you will need to increase your Blacksmithing skill to craft this item, otherwise you will constantly fail.
I highly recommend making the other recipes that require iron ingots until you can make them “really easily”, or at least in yellow. When they are orange you can risk making one, but if they are red you are just wasting materials at this point.
