Modern Warfare III introduces familiar gameplay elements, including the return of slide to cancel, similar to its predecessor Modern Warfare II. The single-player campaign is a blend of linear and open-world missions called Open Combat Missions, giving players the freedom to approach their objectives from open combat to covert tactics. In multiplayer, all 16 maps in Modern Warfare 2 are available, with voting maps and the ability to increase player health.
