Is the BBC drama The Way based on a true story?

Many people have wondered if the BBC series The Pilgrim’s Way is based on a true story. The simple answer is no. Although it may seem like it, especially given the current state of Port Talbot where the series is filmed, The Pilgrim’s Way is actually a work of fiction.

Starring Michael Sheen, who also stars Luke Evans, Mali Harris and Stefan Rhodri, the series follows the Driscoll family as they become caught up in a civil uprising and ultimately flee the chaos.

But while the storyline relates to what happened in Port Talbot and the uncertainty surrounding the steelworks and the community, it’s important to remember that it’s not based on true events. Instead, it’s a fictional story that explores the challenges and emotions that an ordinary family might face in extraordinary circumstances.

Actor Callum Scott-Howells, who stars in the series, spoke about the ways art can sometimes reflect real life in unexpected ways. He mentioned that the timing of the show’s release felt almost unreal, given current events in Port Talbot.

Michael Sheen, who also worked on the show, mentioned that the parallels to real life were not anticipated when they were creating the show. It was just one of those coincidences that sometimes happens in the entertainment world. So while The Pilgrim’s Way may feel like it was ripped from the headlines, it’s important to remember that it is purely a work of fiction, meant to entertain and provoke thought, rather than telling of true events.

Road plot

The Road tells the gripping story of the Driscoll family during turbulent times in Port Talbot. As tensions rise at the steelworks amid fears of closure, Jeff Driscoll, haunted by his father’s tragic past, tries to keep the peace. But when a much-loved local landmark is destroyed, the workers, led by Jeff’s estranged wife Dee and inspired by the legendary ‘Red Monk’, revolt.

Meanwhile, their children Thea and Owen face personal struggles. Thea, a police officer, becomes estranged from Owen as she tries to protect him from drug dealers. Owen, searching for meaning in his life, joins a blockade outside the steel mill and falls in love with Anna, a Polish immigrant.

As Dee’s passionate speech goes viral, protests break out across Wales, leading to a government crackdown. The family finds themselves on opposing sides, with Thea torn between her duties as a police officer and her family career. Things take a turn for the worse when the British Army intervenes, turning Port Talbot into a war zone.

In a desperate bid to escape violence, the family flees their home, leaving their loved ones behind. But their journey is fraught with danger, as they face mercenaries and anti-Welsh sentiment. As they cross into France, tragedy strikes when their ship sinks.

In the chaos, Jeff sacrifices himself and the fate of the rest hangs in the balance as they are detained by French authorities. However, Owen is determined to return home and throws away a symbolic sword, symbolizing a new beginning. The Road is a powerful story of resilience, family bonds, and the fight for survival against all odds.
