Ready Player One
Ready Player One is a 2018 American science fiction action film based on the novel by Ernest Cline. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and co-written by Cline and Zak Penn, with a cast that includes Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, TJ Miller, Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance.

Set in 2045, the film depicts a world where most of humanity has sought solace in a virtual reality simulation game called The OASIS as an escape from reality. The story follows a teenage orphan who discovers clues that lead him to a race for ownership of The OASIS, and he and his allies race against an evil corporation for the prize.
Warner Bros. acquired the rights to the novel in 2010 and began preparations for the film. Steven Spielberg signed on to direct and produce the film in July 2015, and casting began in September of the same year. The film was shot in the UK from June to September 2016, with visual effects by Industrial Light & Magic, Digital Domain, and Territory Studio.
Is James Halliday really dead?
The ending of Ready Player One leaves both the audience and protagonist Wade wondering if James Halliday is truly dead. This confusion is further exacerbated by the appearance of an autonomous version of Halliday during the final test. While Halliday doesn’t directly answer Wade’s questions, his knowing eyes and gratitude for playing the game suggest that he’s more than just a non-player character (NPC).

In Ernest Cline’s book Ready Player One, Wade never questions that the version of Khalid in the Oasis is a high-level NPC created by Khalid himself. Therefore, the character’s questioning of Khalid’s true existence never occurs.
However, in the sequel, Ready Player Two, Khalid has invented a technology that allows a person’s entire mind to be uploaded to the OASIS, creating a perfect AI replica that can live indefinitely. As a result, while Khalid’s physical body has died, his consciousness thrives in the OASIS, blurring the line between life and death. James Khalid is both dead and alive, with his mind existing in the virtual realm as a digital entity.

Mark Rylance’s portrayal of Khalid in Ready Player One is nothing short of extraordinary. At the end of the movie Ready Player One, Khalid’s character emerges as an artificial intelligence in the vast virtual world of the OASIS. While there are fan theories that Khalid achieved the Singularity by uploading his consciousness into the OASIS, it is more likely that he created a sophisticated AI replica of himself. This concept originates from the book and is subtly hinted at in the movie.
Although his physical body is confirmed dead, Halliday’s digital presence within the OASIS allows him to continue existing in a virtual state. In this position, the AI version of Halliday takes on various roles, such as guiding force, guardian, and evaluator, overseeing the running of the game and determining the winner. Ultimately, at the end of the film, Halliday exists as an AI representation of himself, while his physical form remains in the realm of the dead.

In the dystopian world of 2045, people turn to the OASIS, a multiplayer virtual reality world, to escape their harsh reality. Created by James Halliday and Ogden Morrow, the OASIS comes into the spotlight after Halliday’s death. In a pre-recorded message, his avatar Anorak announces a contest to find hidden Easter eggs, the winner of which will gain ownership of the OASIS. Orphan Wade Watts plays the avatar Parzival, and enters the contest along with his friends Aech and Art3mis.
They discover the First Key by winning an invincible competition. As they progress, they discover clues in Khalid’s journal and face challenges related to Khalid’s regrets and personal relationships. Meanwhile, Nolan Sorrento, CEO of Innovative Online Industries, attempts to take control of OASIS for his own gain.
Wade and his friends face danger as they deal with the threat of IOI, including an explosion that takes the life of Wade’s loved ones. Eventually, Wade finds the last key and enters a treasure room, where he meets Anorak, who has transformed into Khalid. With the support of his friends, Wade decides to run OASIS with them, and makes the controversial decision to close it twice a week to encourage people to engage more with the real world.
