Is Tarzan based on a true story?
Edgar Rice Burroughs’ iconic character Tarzan may have been based on a real person. William Charles Myrddin, 14th Earl of Streatham, has similarities to the story of Tarzan. Myrddin was an English nobleman who claimed to have survived in the African wilderness for 15 years after a shipwreck, befriending apes in order to find food.

While there is no direct evidence, his life experiences match those of Tarzan’s adventures – shipwrecks, interactions with primates, and jungle survival. Myrddin’s story was circulated from family documents after his son’s death in 1937. Although Burroughs cited a variety of inspirations, including mythology, the interesting parallels to Myrddin’s life suggest that real-life figures had an underlying influence on the beloved Tarzan character.

Tarzan is a 1999 animated film produced by Walt Disney Pictures, based on a 1912 story by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The film was directed by Kevin Lima and Chris Buck and is the first major film adaptation of Tarzan. Tony Goldwyn, Minnie Driver and Rosie O’Donnell, among others, provide voices for the film. Production on the film began in 1995 when a team traveled to Uganda and Kenya to conduct research on gorillas. Phil Collins wrote the songs and Mark Mancina was responsible for the score.
The film, which combines hand-drawn animation with computer-generated imagery, premiered on June 12, 1999, and grossed $448.2 million worldwide. Its sound, music, and animation were critically acclaimed, and it won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Tarzan’s success spawned a Broadway adaptation, a television series, and two sequels: Tarzan and Jane (2002) and Tarzan 2 (2005).
Tarzan release date
Tarzan premiered at the El Capitan Theatre on June 12, 1999, with the cast and filmmakers in attendance. The premiere included a 40-minute concert with Phil Collins performing songs from the film. Disney then launched a digital screening of Tarzan for three weeks on July 23, 1999, in three theaters, including the Pleasure Island multiplex at Walt Disney World.
Notably, Tarzan was the first major feature film to be created, produced, and screened digitally. This was a significant development, as previous films, such as Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and An Ideal Husband, had received digital screening releases despite being shot on film. The digital release of Tarzan marked a technological milestone for the film industry.

Kala, a gorilla whose son was killed by a leopard, found and adopted the child, naming him Tarzan. As Tarzan grew up, he made friends with the other animals and tried to fit in despite his physical difference. When a group of human explorers, including Jane and her father, arrived to study the gorillas, Tarzan’s world changed.
He learned about the human world and fell in love with Jane, but was in trouble when fellow expedition member Clayton plotted to use the gorillas. With the help of his animal friends, Tarzan saved the day, won the recognition of the gorillas, and decided to stay in the jungle with Jane and her father to create a new life together.
