In Teamfight Tactics, you will engage in intense battles with seven other players. The game board is made up of hexagons, and you can strategically place your units on your side of the battlefield between turns. As rounds progress, brief but action-packed battles begin automatically. You’ll be randomly paired with another player each round, and if you’re not matched with a human opponent, you’ll go up against a computer-controlled enemy. Defeating these enemies can earn you gold, units, or items that will give you an advantage in combat.

The game is divided into phases and rounds. Each stage consists of seven rounds, except for the first stage, which has three rounds of computer-controlled enemies. When you reach the fourth round of each stage, get ready for the exciting Carousel feature! During this shared round, you’ll get to take turns selecting units, each equipped with random items.

The two players with the lowest health will be chosen first, then the next pair with lower health, and so on. If players have similar health points, the order will be determined randomly. In the final round of each stage, you will face more powerful computer-controlled enemies.

Gold coins are a valuable resource in Teamfight Tactics, and you will accumulate it throughout each round. You can save gold to earn interest, increasing your earnings each round. Additionally, winning or losing multiple rounds in a row can further increase your earnings. Using your hard-earned gold, you can re-roll units available in the store at the start of each round, or purchase experience points to upgrade.

Upgrading allows you to place more units on the board, and these units can be enhanced with certain items. Keep an eye out for duplicates of the same unit in the store or shared drafts, as collecting them will upgrade your heroes, increasing their maximum health and attack power. In the heat of battle, units have health and mana bars, damage reduces health and abilities refill mana.

When a unit’s health drops to zero, they are out. Once a unit’s mana bar is full, they unleash powerful abilities. Some units may start a turn with a partial mana bar, but most units start with no mana bar, giving combat dynamics and a strategic advantage. Unleash the potential of synergies, activate them by combining units with the same characteristics into a team.

Each unit possesses two or three traits, and combining them strategically triggers synergies that benefit your gameplay. Synergies can strengthen your allies, weaken your enemies, or provide a variety of effects that add depth to your strategic options. Each “set” of TFT offers a unique unit pool, synergies, and items, ensuring that every game feels fresh and exciting.

TFT keeps things interesting by regularly updating its unit roster. Every three months, Riot Games rolls out a mid-cycle update that rotates out problematic traits and units. This ensures a balanced and engaging gaming experience. Since TFT is a game mode in League of Legends, its patch numbers follow the same system as its parent game, making it easier to track updates and changes.
