Plot of Cuphead
The Cuphead Show! tells the adventures of two anthropomorphic teacup brothers, Cuphead and Mugman, who live in the bizarre 1930s world of Ink Island. The brothers live in a cabin shaped like a teapot with their elderly caretaker, Old Kettle. Throughout the series, Cuphead and Mugman have all sorts of misadventures, often finding themselves in sticky situations that they must try to extricate themselves from.
A recurring plot point is that the demon begins hunting Cuphead’s soul after he loses a soul-collecting game called Soul Ball. Despite the demon’s constant efforts, Cuphead and Mugman skillfully defeat him time and time again. While the show is primarily based on standalone episodes, characters from the original video game are occasionally introduced. Despite the demon’s constant pursuit, the brothers manage to maintain a lighthearted and comedic tone throughout their adventures.
The Cuphead Show! is a colorful, hilarious animated series that combines elements of slapstick with the charm of classic 1930s animation for audiences of all ages.

The Cuphead Show went through a process to become the animated series you see on Netflix. It all started when Netflix decided to make the series in July 2019. Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, the creators of the Cuphead video game, became executive producers along with CJ Kettler and Dave Wasson of King Features Syndicate, among others. Clay Morrow and Adam Paloyan became supervising producers.
The show’s animation was produced by Lighthouse Studios, a division of Mercury Filmworks and Cartoon Saloon. They also used stop-motion animation provided by Screen Novelties. In order to meet the streaming deadline, they were unable to use hand-drawn animation like they did in the game. Instead, they used a puppet-based approach and other techniques to match the style of the 1930s.
The show debuted at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2020. They also announced that Ego Plum will be composing the music for the show. Overall, it was a team effort with many talented people involved in bringing The Cuphead Show to life on Netflix.
Why was the Cuphead show canceled?
