Is “Joker” based on a true story?
The events in the Joker movie are not real. The Joker character in Todd Phillips’ film was inspired by a true story, specifically the events surrounding Bernhard Goetz, known as the “Subway Vigilante.” In 1984, Goetz was harassed on the subway and shot four men who tried to rob him.

An episode of the Netflix documentary series Trial by Media explores this real-life incident. Phillips, a native New Yorker, based the story on the subway scenes of “Joker,” in which Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck faces an attack and responds with violence.
While the film took creative liberties, changing details such as the race of the attacker, it captured the social tension and alienation reflected in Goetz’s case. So while not a direct adaptation, “Joker”‘s narrative is rooted in the disturbing realities of the “Subway Vigilantes” incident.
