Is Warhammer Darktide Crossplay? Realm Uniting Blades: The Crossplay Saga of Warhammer Darktide

Warhammer Undertow

Warhammer 40,000: Undertide is a first-person action video game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It is developed and published by Fatshark and is the spiritual successor to the Warhammer: Vermintide series. The game was initially released on Microsoft Windows on November 30, 2022, and later on Xbox Series X/S on October 4, 2023.

Is Warhammer Darktides a cross-platform game?

Yes, Warhammer 40,000: Undertide now allows players on PC and Xbox Series X|S to play together. This cross-platform gaming feature was added in a major update on June 26th. While Xbox players can choose not to play with other players on PC, PC players don’t have this option. Significant changes have been made to the game, including updates to the gear upgrade system, crafting, and the addition of talent trees for each class in Patch 13.

The surge in player numbers, especially from Xbox Game Pass, is good news for Darktide, which has been suffering from low player numbers recently. The game went through an update drought from December to June, but with a recent patch bringing talent trees and inclusion in Xbox Game Pass, now is a good time to dive into the game. All in all, Warhammer 40,000: Undertide does feature cross-platform play, so now is a great time to get in on the action.

Warhammer Undertow gameplay

The game follows a similar format to Fatshark’s Warhammer: Vermintide 2, with four players working together to overcome waves of AI-controlled enemies. Instead of a fixed character, players can personalize their class, appearance, and gender. The four professions include Veteran, Zealot, Ogryn and Psyker, representing the balance shooter, support profession, tank profession and DPS profession respectively. Every class uses regenerative shields.

Unlike Vermintide 2, Darktide features multiple missions taking place in the same area, some of which have optional secondary objectives for better loot. Difficulty is affected by the number of enemies and damage taken. Progression includes random rewards, in-game currency for purchasing weapons, and a contract system to earn your preferred weapon. Crafting allows players to upgrade weapons and enhance their stats.

Warhammer Undertow plot

The game’s story, written by writer Dan Abnett, follows a group of Inquisition agents investigating a potential Chaos infiltration of the hive city Tertium on the industrial planet Atoma Prime.

The player is called an “Agent” and the story begins with him being detained aboard the prison transport tank Tancred Fortress for a crime identified during character creation. While in transit, Tancred’s Fortress was suddenly attacked by followers of the Chaos God Nurgle. The player rescues Zora the Interpreter and successfully escapes the ship with them. In order to save the players from death, Zola conscripts them into the Inquisition. The Inquisition operates from the Wailstar, deploying agents to various areas within Tetium to investigate and suppress Nurgle’s infestations and cults.

As players gain trust aboard the Wailstar, they must delve into the depths of Atoma’s largest hive, Tertium. The mission includes foiling the Chaos Cult’s plans by retrieving supplies, investigating a daemonic plague, assassinating the leader of a renegade Planetary Defense Force, and retaking vital facilities across the city. Over time, it was discovered that one of the cult’s spies had infiltrated the planet of Mourn, sending detailed reports on the Inquisition’s operations and causing the deaths of the planet’s entire squad of elite operatives. Interrogator Rannick is Grundy’s right-hand man, leading the investigation into the mole while also taking an interest in the player’s progress. After gaining enough trust, Lannic fully welcomes the player into the Inquisition and eliminates the traitors. After this, players will continue their mission as full members of the warband to rid Tetim of Nurgle’s corruption.

The plot is designed to evolve over time in a manner similar to live service, developing each week and following a set meta-narrative.

Will Warhammer 40K be cross-platform on consoles?

Since its launch on November 30, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide has only been available on PC, with the console version not supporting cross-play or cross-save. Console cross-play is currently not available, and a release date for the console version is still to be determined.

While cross-platform play isn’t available at launch, developer Fatshark plans to launch cross-platform play in the future. Since games like Warhammer 40,000: Darktide are better played with friends, cross-platform play will give you more potential partners among your real-life friends.
