Jesse Plemons’ best movies and TV shows showcase a career that just keeps getting better. Though the American actor has been working since the early 1990s, appearing in movies like Varsity Blues and All the Pretty Horses, it wasn’t until the 2000s and his role on the hit show Friday Night Lights that his career really started to take off. From there, Plemons constantly avoided being typecast as he took on different types of roles that showed new sides of his talents.

Plemons has found himself appearing on some of television’s most acclaimed shows, from Breaking Bad to Fargo. However, his success in movies has also been impressive as he has worked for the likes of Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg, shared the screen with legends like Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman, and collaborated with Oscar winners like Leonardo DiCaprio and Emma Stone. Plemons has a long and successful career ahead of him, but his best movies and TV shows already show off his many great roles.

Following their Oscar-winning collaboration on Poor Things, Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos quickly reunited for the strange and eccentric anthology movie Kinds of Kindness. Jesse Plemons joins the ensemble that also includes Margaret Qualley, Joe Allwyn, and Willem Dafoe, with all the actors playing different roles across three very different stories. However, Plemons gets the biggest roles in the movie playing a man trapped in an abusive relationship with his boss, a husband who believes his wife is not who she says she is, and a devoted follower of a cult.
Lanthimos uses the anthology approach to allow him to embrace his dark and quirky sense of humor as well as some of his strangest ideas. The result is a movie that is certainly not for everyone but is never dull. Amid the talented cast, Plemons gets to shine the brightest in a variety of roles that showcase many different sides of his talents.

Jesse Plemons starred in the true-crime story of Judas and the Black Messiah, detailing a dark era of the FBI in America. The movie stars LaKeith Stanfield as Bill O’Neal, a petty criminal who is persuaded by FBI agent Roy Mitchell (Plemons) to go undercover in the Black Panther Party in order to bring down their charismatic and powerful leader, Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). While O’Neal gets closer to Hampton, he is torn between his assignment and his admiration, leading to the assassination of Hampton.
As horrific as the true story is, Plemons wisely does not play his role as a sinister villain. Roy subtly manipulates O’Neal, and while he himself might have reservations about the task, he does nothing to prevent the crime that follows. The movie is an intense and powerful look at a story that holds plenty of relevancy today.

While Black Mirror has featured several big names over the years, including Daniel Kaluuya, Wyatt Russell, and even Miley Cyrus, Jesse Plemons led one of the most acclaimed episodes of Black Mirror to date. “USS Callister” stars Plemons as Robert, a talented video game designer who is bitter at being overlooked in his company. As revenge, he uses the DNA of people who “slight” him to create digital clones who populate his Star Trek-like virtual reality game where they are forced to carry out his fantasy.

While Robert’s mistreated “geek” would be the underdog hero in many stories, Black Mirror brilliantly subverts expectations by making him an entitled and vindictive villain. However, while there are dark elements to the story, “USS Callister” is more vibrant and humorous than the typically bleak Black Mirror episodes, and is the first episode in the series to get its own sequel — coming in season 7.

Jesse Plemons joined a cast filled with Oscar winners but held his own in Paul Thoms Anderson’s The Master. The movie is set in post-World War II America and stars Joaquin Phoenix as Freddie Quell, a troubled and traumatized former soldier who is taken under the wing of a cult leader named Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman). As Freddie becomes part of Dodd’s inner circle, he joins the journey of spreading his teachings across the country while Dodd faces questions and criticisms about what he preaches.
Plemons joins the supporting cast that includes the likes of Amy Adams, Laura Dern, and Rami Malek. Despite the stacked cast, Plemons makes his mark as Val Dodd, Lancaster’s son who is less enthused and believes in the teachings of his father. Anderson creates a complex and layered look at these two men with the performances from the amazing cast making it a fascinating tale.

After collaborating with the legendary Martin Scorsese on the mob movie The Irishman, Plemons was given a bigger role in Scorsese’s true crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon. The movie deals with the true story of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma, which became the richest community per capita after discovering oil on their land. However, the government and powerful people soon scheme to control their wealth, leading to a murderous plot to seize the riches away from the Osage by killing them off.
The story is a grim and fascinating one that also served as the beginning of the FBI. Plemons has a supporting role as Tom White, one of the organization’s earliest agents who comes to investigate the murders. The role is smaller, but Plemons holds his own on-screen with Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone in a breakout role.

Jesse Plemons has excelled in dramatic roles over the years, cementing himself as one of the best character actors in the business. However, he also proves his comedic skills shouldn’t be undervalued with his hilarious performance in Game Night. The crime-comedy follows a group of friends who gather for a murder mystery game night only to find themselves wrapped up in an actual criminal conspiracy.
While there are hilarious performances from the likes of Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as the central couple, Plemons steals the entire show as Gary, their police officer neighbor whose intense demeanor has made him an unwelcomed guest during their game nights. The movie cleverly plays on tropes of the thriller genre, turning them into a hilarious misadventure with a great ensemble. Plemons even gets the chance to reunite with his Friday Night Lights co-star, Kyle Chandler.

Though they have appeared together onscreen several times since becoming a real couple, Jesse Plemons and Kirsten Dunst first collaborated on season 2 of Fargo. The series serves as a prequel to the first season with Lou Solverson (Patrick Wilson) serving as a deputy investigating a violent mob war that has broken out in his once quiet and peaceful community. Plemons and Dunst play Ed and Peggy, a married couple who find themselves in the midst of this war.
Plemons plays into the dark comedy of the series as this exacerbated husband who is trying to help out his wife but grows increasingly disturbed by how she is dealing with their violent circumstances. Often regarded as the best season of Fargo, season 2 also includes a stacked cast, featuring Jean Smart, Cristin Milioti, Ted Danson, Zahn McClarnon, and Kieran Culkin.

Many people were first introduced to Jesse Plemons with his winning supporting role in the sports drama Friday Night Lights. The series is set in a fictional small Texas town where high school football is the center of everything. It follows Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his players as they deal with the pressures of winning in a community where that is all that matters. Plemons plays Landry, the outcast high schooler who is best friends with the team’s new unconfident quarterback, Matt (Zach Gilford).
Despite Plemons’ Landry being part of the worst storyline in the series in season 2, the character overcame that misguided storytelling and remained a fan-favorite, largely due to Plemons’ hilarious performance. Friday Night Lights was an emotional journey with Coach Taylor through the years, making for a rare show that was able to stay consistently good throughout its entire end. Time will tell if Landry will appear in the Friday Night Lights reboot.

Jesse Plemons scored his first Oscar nomination for his understated role in a beautiful Western story. The Power of the Dog stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Phil, a hardened and meanspirited cowboy who works alongside his more personable brother, George (Plemons). However, when George falls for a widowed mother (Kirsten Dunst), Phil turns his cruelty towards her while also forming an unexpected bond with her son (Kodi-Smit McPhee).
From director Jane Campion, The Power of the Dog is a visually stunning movie but is even more engrossing with its characters. All four principal actors earned Oscar nominations for their performances, led by Cumberbatch as the layered protagonist. However, the sweet and quiet romance between Dunst and Plemons is a highlight of the movie and shows the chemistry of the real-life couple.

While Walter White could be considered the true villain of Breaking Bad, Jesse Plemons delivered perhaps the show’s most chilling antagonist. Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston as Walt, a family man and high school chemistry teacher who learns he is dying of cancer and decides to start cooking meth in order to provide his family with some money once he is gone. However, he gradually gets a taste for the criminal world and starts his rise to power as a ruthless drug lord with no equals.
Plemons joined the series in season 5 as Todd, a seemingly kind and respectable aspiring criminal who helps out Walt and Jesse on some occasions. However, Todd proves to be an emotionless and cold-hearted killer. Plemons brings a creepy innocence to the character that makes him all the more unsettling. He is a brilliant addition to the amazing final season of what many call the greatest show of all time.
