Joel Edward McHale (born November 20, 1971) is an Italian-American actor, comedian and television host. McHale is widely recognized for his dynamic career, rising to fame as the host of The Soup (2004-2015) and as Jeff Winger on the NBC sitcom Community (2009-2015). His versatility also extends to film, with notable appearances in Spider-Man 2 (2004), Spy Kids: Time Bandits (2011), Ted (2012) and The Happytime Murders (2018).
In addition to his sitcom success, McHale has branched out into multiple projects, starring in the short-lived CBS sitcom The Great Indoors (2016-2017), hosting a reboot of Card Sharks (2019-2021), and playing the role of superhero Starman on Stargirl (2020-2022). - His father, Jack McHale, was dean of students at Loyola University’s Rome Center, and his mother, Laurie, is Canadian.
- McHale is of Irish and Norwegian descent and was raised in the Catholic faith.
- He lived in Mercer Island, Washington, for a short time before returning to Mercer Island.
- McHale attended Mercer Island High School.
- In 1995, he received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Washington.
- McHale briefly joined the Theta Chi fraternity but left due to personal preferences.
