After his success at Connors State, Romano decided to transfer to Oral Roberts University. In his only season with the Golden Eagles, he served primarily as the team’s closer. Romano made 29 appearances and showed off his skills on the mound. He went 3-4, recording 11 saves, holding a 2.66 ERA and striking out 49 in 40 2/3 innings.
These impressive performances caught the attention of professional scouts, and Romano was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays. He began his career in the Blue Jays’ minor league system, eventually making his Major League debut.
As a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, Romano continued to make significant contributions on the mound, showcasing his talent and dedication to the game at the highest level.
Romano All-Star game appearance
Jordan Romano proved his dominance as the Blue Jays closer by making his second All-Star Game appearance this season. Romano joined Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, Marcus Semien and Teoscar Hernandez in the American League in Seattle.
However, Romano’s playing time in the game was short. In the top of the seventh inning, he faced Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. Gurriel hit a long foul ball to left field that was initially ruled a home run. However, after review, the penalty was overturned and the ball was ruled a foul.
While the referees and replay center reviewed the play, American League trainers tended to Romano, who appeared to be in discomfort. He was subsequently removed from the game and replaced by Tigers pitcher Michael Lorenzen.

After the game, American League head coach Dusty Baker gave an update on Romano’s injury. According to Baker, Romano experienced tightness in his back, which led to his ejection from the game.
“I’m not so sure, when he threw the last pitch in the bullpen before going out there, he said he felt a little tight in his lower back,” Baker said on the Fox broadcast. “We have to take every precaution to take care of these players, even if they are on another team, because they have to go back and play for their team.”
While back tightness doesn’t sound like a serious injury, it’s worth noting that Romano is the Blue Jays’ closer and a vital part of their bullpen. Any injury that keeps him out for an extended period of time could have a significant impact on the team.
Why did Jordan Romano leave?
The Toronto Blue Jays front office is holding its collective breath after watching closer Jordan Romano exit the All-Star Game due to injury. Romano reportedly felt tightness in his lower back while loading the bases in the seventh inning.
While his departure is considered precautionary, his status will be carefully evaluated to determine his availability at the start of the second half of the season. Fantasy managers are advised to consider Romano as day-to-day until further updates are provided.
Blue Jays bullpen depth
The Blue Jays are one of the surprising teams in the 2023 season, sitting atop the AL East with a 57-35 record. While the team’s offense is its greatest strength, the bullpen is also a huge part of its success.
In addition to Romano, the Blue Jays have several other solid relievers, including Tim Meza, Tyler Chatwood and Rafael Dolis. However, the team’s bullpen depth could be tested if Romano is out for an extended period.
The Blue Jays may need to turn to some younger pitchers, such as Julian Merriweather or Anthony Castro, to fill the void left by Romano. While both pitchers have shown potential, they lack Romano’s experience and track record of success.
Romano’s 2023 season
Romano was having a great 2023 season before getting hurt. He tied with Cincinnati’s Alexis Diaz and San Francisco’s Camilo Doval for the MLB lead with 26 saves and a 2.12 ERA.
Romano’s performance has been a huge factor in the Blue Jays’ success this season. The team relied heavily on him in the final innings and he excelled time and time again.

If Romano is out for an extended period, the Blue Jays will need to find a way to replace him in the lineup. While the team has other reliable relievers, none of them are as dominant as Romano.
Romano’s injury history
Unfortunately, Romano has an injury history that could cause concern for the Blue Jays. In 2022, he missed a lot of games due to a finger injury, which limited him to 40 appearances.
While back tightness may not be as serious a problem as a finger injury, it’s worth noting that Romano may be more susceptible to the injury than other pitchers. The Blue Jays will need to monitor his health closely and make sure he doesn’t return to the mound prematurely.
Blue Jays playoff hopes
The Blue Jays are in a great position to make the playoffs this season, thanks in large part to their potent offense and bullpen. However, if Romano is out for an extended period, the team’s chances of making the playoffs could be in jeopardy.
The playoffs are different than the regular season, and having a dominant finisher like Romano can make all the difference. If the Blue Jays don’t have him, they may struggle to close out games against tough opponents.
Romano’s future with Blue Jays
Jordan Romano is a big part of the Blue Jays’ present and future. He is under team control throughout the 2024 season and has proven he has the ability to be an elite closer in the major leagues.
However, given Romano’s injury history, the Blue Jays may need to start thinking about contingency plans in case Romano doesn’t stay healthy. The team has several young pitchers in the system who could eventually take over the tight end role, including Nate Pearson and Simon Woods-Richardson.
Jordan Romano’s injury is a major concern for the Blue Jays, but it’s too early to tell how serious it is. The team has several other solid relievers who can step up in his absence, but none of them are as dominant as Romano.
The Blue Jays will need to monitor Romano’s health closely and make sure he doesn’t return to the mound prematurely. If he’s out for an extended period, the team’s chances of making the playoffs could be jeopardized.
Ultimately, the Blue Jays’ success this season will depend on the health of key players, including Romano. If he can return to the mound soon and play at a high level, the team’s playoff hopes remain alive. But if his injury persists, the Blue Jays may need to start looking at Plan B.
