Kamala Devi Harris was born on October 20, 1964 in Oakland, California. She was born to immigrant parents. Her father, Donald Harris, is a Jamaican economist, and her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, is an Indian cancer researcher. After her parents divorced in 1971, Harris was raised by her mother and sister Maya. The family attended a Baptist church and a Hindu temple, giving her an extremely rich cultural heritage, with deep roots in African American and South Asian ancestry.
