The award was established from 1991 to 1992 to recognize excellence in sport. This prestigious award is presented annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It honors athletes who have demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication and achievement in their respective fields.

The award highlights India’s commitment to promoting sports and inspiring athletes to achieve excellence. The winners will receive medals, certificates and cash prizes of Rs 25 lakh.
In 2025, the Kyle Ratna Award was awarded to four outstanding athletes: Harmanpreet Singh (Hockey), Manu Bhaker (Shooting), Gukesh D (Chess) and Praveen Kumar (Para-Athletics). The award ceremony will be held on January 17, 2025 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
