Khruangbin History

Khruangbin traces its roots back to Houston, Texas, where guitarist Mark Speer and drummer DJ Johnson met while playing in a church gospel band in 2004. In 2007, Laura Lee Ochoa was introduced to the band by a mutual friend. Ochoa and Speer share a love of Afghan music and Middle Eastern architecture, and after touring with the band Yppah in 2010, they began making music together more seriously.

The band’s name, Khruangbin, means “airplane” in Thai, reflecting their international influence. The trio developed their unique musical style in a barn in Burton, Texas, which they later recorded in. Their debut EP, A History of Flight, and their first studio album, The Universe Smiles at You (2015), both drew on 1960s Thai music.

Subsequent albums, such as Con Todo el Mundo (2018) and Mordechai (2020), showcased their diverse influences, including Spanish and Middle Eastern music. Often described as Thai funk, Khruangbin’s instrumental style defies easy categorization, incorporating soul, rock, dub, and psychedelia.

The band’s visual style includes distinctive black wigs that Ochoa and Speer wear during performances and interviews. Their journey continues with collaborations including the 2022 album Ali with Vieux Farka Touré and the release of the 2024 album A la Sala, showcasing Khruangbin’s continued exploration of the global musical landscape.
