Law-abiding citizen complex
In Law Abiding Citizen, Clyde Shelton witnesses his wife and daughter being brutally raped and murdered during a home invasion. Prosecutor Nick Rice makes a deal with one of the murderers, Clarence Darby, to secure a conviction, allowing Darby to receive a light sentence. Feeling betrayed by the justice system, Clyde plans an elaborate revenge. Years later, during the execution of another criminal, Clyde rigs a lethal injection to cause excruciating pain and implicate Darby. Clyde then lures Darby into a trap, paralyzing him and torturing him to death. Clyde surrenders and is imprisoned.
While in prison, Clyde trades privileged access for information and manipulates events behind bars. He forces Nick to meet his special requests and uses them to further his revenge on those involved in his family’s case. It is revealed that Clyde was once a skilled CIA assassin, adding to the complexity of his character. As Clyde’s actions escalate, Nick and the others realize the extent of his elaborate planning and manipulation.
Clyde’s ultimate goal becomes clear: to expose the flaws of the justice system by showing how easily it can be manipulated. Despite attempts to stop him, Clyde continues his vengeance, leading to a series of deadly events including bombings and assassinations. The film climaxes with Clyde attempting to blow up a government building, but is stopped by Nick, who locks him in a cell with the bomb. Clyde’s final act of defiance is to detonate the bomb, ending his own life.
Afterwards, Nick reflects on these events and the price they cost. Despite stopping Clyde, Nick still feels uneasy because he knows the system has failed Clyde and his family. The film ends with Nick attending his daughter’s performance, highlighting the personal sacrifices he made in his pursuit
