The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
In 2023, Nintendo developed and released “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”, an action-adventure game specially built for the Nintendo Switch platform. The sequel to the critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017), Kingdom Tears builds on the open-world setting of Hyrule from its predecessor, providing even more opportunities for vertical exploration.

The game’s storyline revolves around Link and Princess Zelda as they try to stop Ganondorf from wreaking havoc on Hyrule. The concept for Kingdom Tears stemmed from the idea of Breath of the Wild’s downloadable content (DLC) being too broad to be included within that framework.

A trailer for the game was released at E3 2019, followed by a full reveal at E3 2021. Although originally planned for release in 2022, the game’s release was later delayed to May 2023.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Age Rating
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has received an E10+ (all ages 10 and up) rating from the ESRB, primarily for containing fantasy violence and mildly suggestive themes. This means the game is suitable for players aged 10 and up. Additionally, Kingdom Tears does not contain any interactive elements, ensuring players cannot interact online or make in-game purchases.
The absence of these elements promotes a focused and independent gaming experience. According to the ESRB rating summary, “Players use swords, hammers, bows, and explosives to attack enemies that often disappear.” Link stands on a wide, tractor-like contraption in the middle of a large field. In smoke and/or collectibles.
Combat in Kingdom Tears is stylized, often characterized by fast-paced action, impactful sounds, painful expressions, and the occasional brief explosion. The ratings summary also notes that some characters “wear revealing costumes.” The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is out for Nintendo Switch.

Kingdom Tears retains the open-world action-adventure gameplay that made its predecessor so successful. Players take on the role of Link, who is free to explore the vast world of Hyrule as well as two new areas: the Sky Islands and the Abyss. Throughout the journey, players can discover weapons, resources and complete missions.
Exploration in Kingdom Tears offers a variety of methods, such as walking, running, riding a horse, climbing, and using a paraglider, which is reminiscent of mechanics from the previous game. Kingdom Tears introduces new elements, featuring Zonai equipment and advanced technological tools that players can use to fight, advance, explore, and more.
The game replaces the runes from the previous game with five new powers: Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, Recall, and Autobuild. Ultrahand enables players to interact with and move different objects, allowing various items to be connected together. This can be combined with Zonai equipment to create unique vehicles or structures.
Fuse allows Link to combine materials, equipment, or specific objects in the game world to enhance the properties and durability of a shield or weapon. For example, fusing explosives to an arrow will create an explosive impact when hitting the target. Autobuild can instantly recreate devices created with Ultrahand, but requires zonatite.
Ascent enables the player to move upward through solid surfaces, while recall can be used to rewind the movement of certain objects. Temples and Korok Seeds return in Kingdom Tears. Clearing the temple will grant the player a blessed light, and collecting four of these will allow Link to increase his heart count or expand his stamina rounds.
Korok Seeds can be used to enhance Link’s inventory capacity, allowing him to carry more melee weapons, shields, or bows. However, a new threat has appeared in the game called “The Gloom,” which appears primarily near the pits leading into the Abyss and from the enemies encountered there. When exploring the abyss or encountering shadowy enemies, Link takes ongoing damage and is unable to replenish lost hearts until he reappears to restore his maximum health.
