Chapter One: Marty’s Camp

Lisa: The pain game
Lisa offers a unique blend of traditional turn-based RPG combat in a 2D side-scrolling world. Brad and some of the party members struggle with addiction to the powerful drug Joey, which gives them powers but causes severe withdrawal symptoms if not used. In the overworld, players will encounter various settlements with shops and bars where potential party members can be recruited.
The game introduces thirty possible companions, but all but Brad can face permadeath, either through scripted events like Russian Roulette or the fatal actions of certain enemies. During combat, players can use the “Dial Combo” system to perform combo attacks that require precise key sequences to produce powerful moves. Each party member has a unique play style and abilities, such as applying status effects or using offensive techniques.
Throughout the game, player choices will greatly affect gameplay. Brad may lose his arm or some party members, affecting his stats and increasing the frequency with which Joey quits. If Brad loses his arms, he can only bite his opponents without using Armstrong style. In the follow-up “Lisa: Happy Companion”, Buddy became the protagonist, with similar gameplay, but with enhanced travel capabilities and timed attacks in battle.
