List of all Chief Election Commissioners and Election Commissioners of India (1950-2025)

The election committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed Gyanesh Kumar as India’s new chief election commissioner (CEC). He will replace Rajiv Kumar, who will retire on Tuesday at the age of 65.

Rajiv Kumar played a CEC role in May 2022 and played a crucial role in overseeing key elections, including the 2024 Lok Sabha poll and multiple state parliamentary elections. His tenure focuses on enhancing election transparency and encouraging more voters to participate. With his retirement, Gyanesh Kumar will now be in charge of the Election Commission of India (ECI), introducing new leadership.

India’s Chief Election Commissioner – Briefing

The Chief Election Commissioner of India is the head of the Election Commission of India. The President of India appoints the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India, whose term is 6 years or up to 65 years, whichever is earlier. CEC in India is usually a member of the Indian civil service system and is mainly derived from Indian administrative services.

According to the 1991 Election Commission (the conditions of service and conditions of commercial transactions of the Election Commission), the Chief Election Commissioner’s salary is the same as the judge of the Supreme Court of India. Currently, the CEC salary is Rs 2.5 lakh per month.

It is difficult to be the chief election commissioner who was once appointed by the President of India, as two-thirds of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members need to vote against the CEC for misconduct or misconduct.

Indian Election Commissioner – Briefing

Until October 1989, the committee was a member body, but later adopted a parliamentary bill to add two other election commissioners. Therefore, the Election Commission is currently composed of the Chief Election Commissioner and two other Election Commissioners. The decision of the committee was made by a majority vote.

history

The committee originally had only one chief election commissioner in 1950. On October 16, 1989, two other committees were appointed for the first time, but they had little solution to the constitutional work, so the President issued a notice on January 1, 1990 to abolish the ECS post. The Government once again made the Election Commission a three-person agency on October 1, 1993. The 1989 Election Commissioner Amendment made the Commission a multi-member body. Since then, the concept of a three-person committee has been operating, making decisions with a majority vote. The official website was launched on February 28, 1998.
