Since the establishment of the Supreme Court of India on January 26, 1950, 50 judges have served as the Chief Justice of India. Justice DY Chandrachud is the 50th Chief Justice of India.
The Chief Justice of India is appointed by the President of India and serves until the age of 65. Generally, the most senior judge of the Supreme Court of India is appointed as the Chief Justice of India.

The Federal Court of India was established on October 1, 1937. The first Chief Justice of India was Sir Maurice Gwyer (October 1, 1937 to April 25, 1943). The Federal Court of India functioned from 1937 to 1950. Justice Harilal Jekisundas Kania is the first Indian-origin Chief Justice of India.
Justice YV Chandrachud was the longest-serving Chief Justice (February 1978 to July 1985) with a tenure of 2696 days, while Kamal Narain Singh was the shortest-serving Chief Justice (November 21, 1991 to December 1991 12th), only 17 days.
