The appointment of the Chief Minister and other Ministers is governed by Section 164, which provides for the appointment of the Chief Minister by the Governor, usually the leader of the party having a majority in the State Assembly.

The state of Gujarat was formed on May 1, 1960, in the aftermath of the Maha Gujarat Movement, which resulted in the secession of the Gujarati-speaking region from the state of Bombay.
The first chief minister was Jeevraj Narayan Mehta from the Indian National Congress, who served until March 3, 1962. Since its establishment, Gujarat has had 18 chief ministers.
As of January 2025, Bhupendrabhai Patel is the current Chief Minister and took office on September 13, 2021 after the resignation of Vijay Rupani.
Going forward, the next elections in Gujarat are expected to be significant. Voting in the main constituencies will be held on December 5, 2025, and vote counting is scheduled for December 8, 2025.

Who is the current Chief Minister of Gujarat?
The current Chief Minister of Gujarat is Bhupendrabhai Patel, who has assumed office since September 13, 2021. He represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was re-elected for a second term on December 12, 2022, after the party achieved a major victory. In the state assembly elections, they won 156 out of 182 seats.
Furthermore, the next election for the Chief Minister of Gujarat is scheduled to be held in December 2027. These elections will elect all 182 members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.
