1) Siachen Glacier, Ladakh

The Siachen Glacier is the coldest non-polar place in the world. It is located in the northern Karakoram Mountains and is the coldest place in India, with an altitude of 5,753 meters.

As a result, temperatures in the region can fall as low as -50°C in January. In summer, the temperature remains around -10°C.

The area is part of disputed territory between India and Pakistan and is one of the most hostile regions in the world. Although only military personnel are seen here, they are equipped with special clothing and equipment to withstand the extremely cold conditions.

Thousands of military personnel from both countries lost their lives here due to severe weather conditions such as heavy snowfall, blizzards, and avalanches.

Located in the Kargil town of Ladakh, Dras is known as the coldest place in India and the second coldest inhabited place in the country. At an altitude of 3,280 meters, it is also known as the “Gateway of Ladakh”.

The area is also a base for trekking for pilgrims to Amarnath Caves and Sialkot.

The area’s scenic beauty, ridges, snow-capped mountains and biting cold, is home to the Drass War Memorial, built in memory of the Kargil War martyrs of Drass.

3) Ladakh, Ladakh

India’s famous federal territory Leh Ladakh is located in the northernmost tip of India, close to the Himalayas. The area is 6,000 meters above sea level and is one of the coldest places in India. Temperatures here range from -12°C to -2°C.

Leh is located in Ladakh and offers unique scenery and various natural attractions. It is home to Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, pagodas and stunning attractions, but the winter climate is harsh due to heavy snowfall and temperatures as low as minus 35°C.

4) Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

The cold desert mountain Spiti Valley is located in Himachal Pradesh. The word “Spiti” stands for the middle ground and as the name suggests, it is located between India and Tibet.

Also known as “Little Tibet”, the climate, vegetation, and terrain are similar to those of Tibet. Spiti has a pleasant climate with temperatures as low as -30°C in winter and rising temperatures in summer.

At an altitude of 2745 meters, it borders Ladakh; Tibet to the east; near Kinnaur to the southeast; and to the north, the region borders the Kullu Valley.

Home to numerous Buddhist monasteries and scenic natural attractions, this jagged valley landscape is cut by the Spiti River that flows through valleys and ravines.

5) Sera Pass, Tawang

Situated between the Tawang and West Kamun districts of Arunachal Pradesh, the Serra Pass is known as the refrigerator of India.

It is 4170 meters above sea level and connects Tawang, Tezpur and Guwahati. The winter temperature in the area can be as low as -15°C. The Sera Pass is covered in snow and offers picturesque views of the eastern Himalayas, as well as Tawang’s beautiful Sera Lake.

This area is a holy land of Tibetan Buddhism. There are 101 holy lakes in the territory and it is a famous tourist attraction.

6) Musiali, Uttarakhand

Munsiyari, one of the coldest tourist destinations in India, is a hill station located in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand.

Vinciari is 2,500 meters above sea level and is dry and cold all year round, with temperatures reaching -10 degrees Celsius in winter. With its icy lakes and snow-capped mountains, it is also known as “Little Kashmir”.

This place offers huge hiking trails and mesmerizing views of the Panchachuli peaks, which consist of five peaks. Munsiyari is known as the “Gateway to Jowhar Valley” and is the base for trekking to Namlik, Lalam and Milam glaciers and other parts of the Kumaon Himalayas.

Lachen and Tangu Valley are the coldest towns in North Sikkim, India, at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Winter temperatures in the area can be minus 10 degrees Celsius.

These towns have valleys filled with alpine meadows, bordering the Tisza River and wooden houses with picturesque mountain views. The climate is pleasant in summer, with temperatures around 10°C.
