Lowest Team Scores in T20 World Cup till 2024

The T20 format doesn’t always emphasize high scores and batting dominance; occasionally, the bowlers have the upper hand. Throughout the history of the T20 World Cup, some teams have been eliminated with extremely low scores.

It is noteworthy that the Netherlands holds the record for the lowest score in the history of the T20 World Cup. On March 24, 2014, the Netherlands was defeated by Sri Lanka by 39 runs at the Zahoor Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong.

This record is the lowest in the history of the T20 World Cup. The Netherlands batting order was beaten to pieces by the excellent performance of Rachit Malinga and Ajanta Mendis. Malinga took 2 for 5, Mendis took 3 for 12 and Mathews took 3 for 16, which together held the Netherlands to just 39 runs in 10.3 overs. Sri Lanka then chased the target easily in 5 overs.

2. Netherlands (44 vs Sri Lanka, 2021)

The Netherlands also holds the record for the second lowest team score in a T20 World Cup. Seven years ago, the Netherlands again fell to a fierce Sri Lankan bowling attack and were bowled out for just 44. Hasaranga and Lahiru Kumara took three runs each to enable Sri Lanka to achieve the target in 7.1 overs.

3. West Indies (55 v England, 2021)

West Indies are the third lowest scoring team in the T20 World Cup. The Caribbean side is known for their explosive batting ability but they were bowled out for just 55 against England during the 2021 Dubai World Cup. Adil Rashid spearheaded England’s bowling attack and wreaked havoc on the West Indies batting order with a stunning 4-2.

4. New Zealand (60 vs Sri Lanka, 2014)

New Zealand are fourth among the lowest scoring teams in the T20 World Cup. Their batsmen faced an uphill battle in chasing 120 in a crucial Super 10 match. Despite Kane Williamson’s contribution of 42, the subsequent top score was just 5. Rangana Herat played a major role in the opposition, taking an impressive 3 for 5, leading to the collapse of New Zealand, who were bowled out for just 60 in 15.3 overs.

6. Ireland (68 v West Indies, 2010)

Ireland is the sixth lowest scoring team in the T20 World Cup. In the 2010 tournament, Ireland lost wickets right from the first innings while chasing 139 against hosts West Indies. The quick-hitting trio of Ravi Rampaul, Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy came on strong, taking eight wickets and restricting Ireland to 68 runs.

7. Hong Kong (69 compared to Nepal, 2014)

The seventh lowest score of the Twenty20 World Cup came from Hong Kong, who scored just 69. Chasing 150 in the first round of the 2014 tournament against Nepal, only three batsmen scored in double figures. Basant Regmi and Shakti Goshan were the mainstays of Nepal’s bowling attack, taking three runs each in 17 overs to bowl out their opponents. 8. Bangladesh (70 vs. New Zealand, 2016)

Bangladesh is ranked 8th in the list of lowest scoring teams in the T20 World Cup. Bangladesh faced a tough challenge from the New Zealand bowling line-up in the 2016 T20 World Cup Super 10.
