Early life and struggle
Manoj Kumar was born during British rule in Abbottabad, currently Pakistan. His family moved to Delhi at the age of 10 after the partition. The traumatic experience of losing his brother during the riot left a lasting impression on him. Despite these difficulties, Kumar received his Bachelor of Arts from the Indian Academy of Delhi. Inspired by actors like Dilip Kumar and Ashok Kumar, he adopted the screen name “Manoj Kumar” after Dilip Kumar’s role Shabnam.
