Mike Colter’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Mike Colter

’s best movies and TV shows demonstrate that he is more than just an action star who can land a punch. Colter has a varied career in movies and television, and though he has a lot of action projects under his belt, those action projects are not all the same – or all his best. Colter has done an excellent job at making sure he does not get typecast after previously playing imposing figures in action movies.

Colter got his start in the early 2000s in television and film roles that saw him play fighters and criminals, but he has branched out into a lot of different comedies and dramas. He has even lent his voice to animated projects and to narrate documentaries. Colter has been able to make even small roles in large ensembles stand out, and his versatility is to be admired by those who love to watch a good story play out on screen.

…fans still hope to see Colter’s Luke Cage brought back for another story or two.

The Defenders is a unique series. The miniseries was the culmination of four other television series, bringing their main characters together for a new story under the Marvel umbrella. It combined characters from Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist when all four shows were streaming on Netflix to allow all the main heroes to team up for a common goal.

While the series is certainly not a bad adventure for the characters, it felt like too many different styles coming together to work in a truly cohesive way. Despite that, Colter still does a fantastic job with his version of comic book character Luke Cage. He does not get quite as much to do here as he does in the character’s solo series, but it allows the audience to see how well Colter can play off of other actors like Charlie Cox and Finn Jones, who they had not yet seen him interact with quite as much in the Marvel world.

Shows like The Defenders help to make it clear that Marvel can combine characters from different areas to craft new stories on the small screen in the same way they have been doing on the big screen. With all of the shows having moved from Netflix to Disney+, fans still hope to see Colter’s Luke Cage brought back for another story or two.

For those who like their action-thrillers with a side of disaster, Plane is the movie for you. Despite its seemingly simple title, the movie is a fun time for fans of the action genre, especially those who have already seen Gerard Butler’s other bouts.

While Plane is not a sequel to one of Butler’s other movies, it has a similar set-up and story to many of the action projects he has become known for. Here, Butler plays a pilot flying a small group of passengers overseas when a lightning strike causes complications. The plane is forced to land on an island off the Philippines that just happens to be controlled by rebels who are more than willing to kidnap survivors and hold them for ransom.

Colter plays a suspected murderer who was being escorted back to Canada for trial when the plane went down. He and Butler’s characters team up to save the day. Though Colter has appeared in several action projects before Plane, Plane cements him as a bona fide action star. There is some B-movie silliness here, but Colter’s presence helps make the world feel lived-in and real.

In 2023 a sequel to the movie, called Ship, was announced with Mike Colter returning.

Girls Trip undeniably belongs to the women in the leading roles: Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Tiffany Haddish. The group stars as friends who have lost touch over the years who reunite for a trip when one of their own is a keynote speaker at the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans. Their trip is full of hilarious missteps, dramatic reveals, and cathartic moments for them.

If the audience is rooting for the women, however, they will despise Mike Colter’s character. Colter stars as the husband of Regina Hall’s Ryan. It is revealed very quickly in the movie that he has been cheating on her, and while she is trying to find a way to repair their relationship, he is still focused on other women. However, he is also focused on using her brand to make money for himself. Colter is pretty unlikable in the role, which is rare for him, and why this movie is one of his best.

Colter’s emotional performances, charm, and swagger always help the audience to connect with him. Here, he gets to push them away, and he does a great job at playing against type.

Girls Trip was nominated for five NAACP Image Awards, winning two.

Colter’s first movie out of the gate was an Oscar winner for Best Picture…

Million Dollar Baby is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the 21st century. It was also the first movie Mike Colter ever appeared in.

The movie follows Hilary Swank as a woman who wants to become a professional boxer. She trains under Clint Eastwood’s character, though he is initially reluctant to take her on. While the movie builds and builds on her success, her rise to the top ultimately ends in a surprising way. Plenty of critics heaped their praises on the movie while also referencing it as a dark and tragic one.

Colter’s role in the movie is not as one of the principal characters. Instead, he appears as a boxer who has been training with Eastwood’s character for years, but one who betrays him to sign with a rival manager when his career is not progressing fast enough for him. It might not be a huge role for Colter, and his scenes only get to show a fraction of his talent, but it is a sneak peek at that very talent and how it will grow.

Colter’s first movie out of the gate was an Oscar winner for Best Picture, and he has built an impressive career of telling unique stories ever since.

Million Dollar Baby was nominated for seven Oscars, winning four, and five Golden Globes, winning two.

Seis Manos is an incredibly underrated Netflix animated series. The show has not been officially announced as canceled by Netflix, but a season 2 never materialized after the first began streaming in 2019.

The series follows a group of orphans who have been trained in martial arts. They decide to use their skills to find the person responsible for the death of their master. In order to solve the mystery, however, they have to team up with a police officer and Drug Enforcement Agency member to get information.

Colter voices DEA Agent Brister. Here, the show plays with blaxploitation in a way that none of Colter’s other projects have. His voice allows him to make the character brash, flirtatious, and larger than life. Brister is also incredibly cocky and provides a look at hypermasculinity, but those ideas are often played for laughs, allowing Colter to flex his comedy skills in the voiceover role.

Skin is a movie that, like a lot of Colter’s standout projects, has flown mostly under the radar. It’s a biopic centering on Byron Widner (Jaime Bell). Widner is a former white supremacist who founded one of the most violent and racist groups in the U.S. He spends 16 years on that path before turning away from it, but because of his past, he has trouble finding his way. That’s where Colter’s character comes in.

Daryle Lamont Jenkins is the founder of a group called One People’s Project. One of the group’s many goals was to help bring hate groups to an end. They actively helped members of hate groups leave the organizations they belonged to and reached out to give helping hands to those who might have been in those organizations because of other relationships. Jenkins provides Widner with a light in the dark.

Even when faced with the potential for so much evil and bad deeds, Widner never wavers. He is a practical man in a world of hate, and he still uses empathy and understanding to connect with those who might target him. Colter as Widner is a force and he gives a powerful performance.

Mike Colter got his feet wet in the Marvel world by appearing in a recurring role in the first season of Jessica Jones, which was one of the shows that would feed into The Defenders. The connected Marvel shows did a great job at exploring their street-level heroes.

In Jessica Jones, the focus is firmly on the titular character, played by Krysten Ritter. Jessica is a private investigator with a tough past who prefers to drink to forget her problems. She also has super powers. The series explores Jessica as a woman with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as she struggles to face her traumas head-on.

When Colter enters the show, it’s as a bartender at a local haunt. That bartender is eventually revealed as Luke Cage, a man with powers of his own. His invulnerable skin means that Jessica does not have to be careful of her super strength around him, and the two hit it off, even if it is only for a short time. Colter brings a lightness to the world of Jessica Jones when the series is otherwise so dark. It’s nice to see Jessica have him as a bright spot in her life, even though it does not last long in the series.

Colter is charming and capable in the role, and from his early scenes, it’s clear he has the makings of an action hero, but that gets explored more in other corners of the Marvel shows instead of this one.

The Good Wife is one of the most beloved dramas of recent years. It follows a woman who gets back on her career path after discovering that her politician husband has been cheating on her. After previously having been a lawyer before giving up her career for his to take off, getting back into the swing of things is not easy.

Colter recurs throughout the series in the role of Lemond Bishop. He is actually one of the law firm’s clients. A wealthy drug dealer, Lemond could have been played by someone who leaned into stereotypes, but Colter and the show went another way. In addition to his actual legal troubles and illegal activities, Lemond runs legitimate businesses as well, which is where the firm initially helps him.

Colter also plays Lemond as a devoted father and there is a warmth to his character despite the dangerous circumstances he might often be in. Mike Colter also plays Lemond Bishop in spin off series The Good Fight.

The Good Wife is something of an award show darling with more than 150 nominations from different organizations during its time on the air and 28 wins.

Fans of The X-Files will likely find much to like in Evil. It’s a procedural series that focuses on supernatural phenomena and the episodes often play out like mini horror movies.

Colter stars in the series as David Acosta, a former journalist and war correspondent who begins the series studying to become a Catholic priest. He is tasked by the church with finding out if miracles or demonic activity are real, taking on new investigations with his team, which includes a forensic psychologist and a tech genius.

Colter’s Acosta is a man who has seen a lot in his day, so there is a world weariness to him, but he is also a man of strong faith. That combination means that, despite everything, he is willing to believe the best in people and root out the evil they come up against every day. Though the show might have formulaic elements because of its procedural style, the cast turn out emotional and complex performances in every episode, including Colter.

Evil has been nominated for six Saturn Awards, nine Critics Choice Awards, and 13 Critics Choice Super Awards during its run.

Though Colter first appeared in Jessica Jones as Luke Cage, the character’s solo series is where he really shines in the role. Colter is the perfect actor to take on the character under the guidance of showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker.

The series sees Luke Cage move into a Harlem neighborhood and attempt to get his life in order. Though he tries to keep his past under wraps, his superhuman abilities lead to him being able to help protect those in the neighborhood and stop the plans of different villains each season.

Colter was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and a Saturn Award for his work in the show.

One of the reasons Colter is so great as Cage is that he plays the role with a quiet seriousness. The character debuted in Marvel Comics during the era of blaxploitation in films, and that style is how the comics were initially written as well. While writers and set designers of the show gave plenty of nods to that era of media, Colter was able to play Luke Cage as a man who just wanted to live his life in peace. He is not over the top, but methodical, empathetic, and kind.

Mike Colter brought his A-game when it came to playing Luke Cage, and though he has played plenty of other thought-provoking roles and been in other action projects, Luke Cage is still his best. While it’s unclear if Colter will ever return to the role for the MCU, there are plenty of fans who want him to.
