Milo Manheim’s 10 Best Movies And TV Shows

Milo Manheim has only been acting professionally for a few years, and most of his best movies and TV shows are currently family-friendly fare. With the Disney Channel providing him his big on-screen break, that is not entirely surprising. He has appeared in numerous movies and TV shows for the Disney Channel in just a few short years, gaining plenty of professional experience and even earning producer credit on some of those projects.

Manheim, however, actually got his start at just eight years old. He appeared in an episode of the drama Ghost Whisperer alongside his mother, actor Camryn Manheim. After that, he finished school, learned how to play several different instruments, and participated in local theater productions before getting his big break in 2018. His best movies and TV shows reflect how hard he has worked in a very short time.

Milo Manheim only made his big break with Disney Channel in 2018, so it might be surprising to some that he was selected as a Dancing With the Stars contestant the same year. It was likely a bit of corporate synergy to help promote Zombies for the Disney Channel and to get more families and younger audiences to tune into the ABC reality competition show. It worked – Manheim came in second place for the season.

Manheim, who grew up learning to play the guitar, drums, and piano before picking up the ukulele, has an ear for music. His background in musical theater, performing live for an audience, even without a ton of professional camera experience, made him a natural fit for the show. It helped audiences get to know him a little better beyond him simply being just another new Disney Channel face as well.

…the series is a preview of what a great voice actor he could one day become.

With the huge success of the Disney Channel’s Zombies movies, the network took a page from the book they used for Descendants and created animated shorts to air on the network as well. Those animated shorts eventually spawned an actual animated series.

While cynics might see this as a way to keep kids interested in the Zombies movies, it is also a great way to allow the talented cast of the movies to expand their work. Instead of appearing in live-action on a set for weeks or months to film, they get to voice the characters who live in a town full of supernatural beings with a history of segregating zombies from humans, and they get to play in the world of acting with just their voices as their tools.

That is definitely a different approach to acting for someone like Manheim, who grew up doing theater, where every body movement has purpose and voices need to reach the back of the room. He offers a great turn as Zed and the series is a preview of what a great voice actor he could one day become.

Thanksgiving is not a holiday that gets the horror movie treatment often, which is probably why the unique idea intrigued horror fans. It also likely intrigued fans of 2007’s Grindhouse because it is based on one of the fictional trailers present in that movie and viewers will notice that Thanksgiving pays homage to a lot of other horror classics.

The movie follows a young woman who is stalked by someone during the week of Thanksgiving. The stalking, and his torturing and killing of her friends and family members, is the result of an incident during a Black Friday shopping event the year before in which several people ended up dead.

While the movie received mostly positive reviews and made a profit on its relatively small budget, Manheim does not have a huge role in the movie. He plays the current boyfriend of the main character, but it is her ex and her friends who get most of the spotlight. As a result, many of Manheim’s other movies and TV shows are better demonstrations of his skills.

Thanksgiving 2 is currently in development.

It can be very difficult for filmmakers to bring movies that feature heavily religious-themed projects to wider audiences. While Christmas rom-coms might have wide appeal because the focus is on love and the secular aspects of the holiday, Biblical stories do not always make for hits. That being said, Journey to Bethlehem takes a slightly different approach than usual to the retelling of the birth of Jesus.

While it is still set in a historical time period, the movie infuses modern pop into its classical Christmas music. The music is used to help move the story forward, allowing the actors to truly perform instead of simply retell a saccharine tale. It’s the committed performances of the cast, like Manheim as Joseph and Fiona Palomo as Mary, that make the movie work. It might not have been a box office success, but it gave a new look into a story that most people on the planet already know and kept it fresh.

Zombies 3 is the first of the Zombies movies to stream on Disney+ before airing on the Disney Channel. It’s also the first to give Manheim and co-star Meg Donnelly co-producing credits on the movie.

Every chapter of the zombies franchise introduces a new species to the lore. In this case, it’s aliens. A group of aliens land in town trying to find the coordinates to a Utopia for their species. A scout had been sent to the planet long ago. Their mission leads to a little bit of conflict with the werewolves and zombies who already have made their home in the small town, but their presence ultimately expands the lore of the franchise with previously thought human characters revealed to be related to the alien species.

Manheim is executive producing and starring in Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires alongside Donnelly.

Manheim gets to play slightly more drama in this particular installment of the franchise as his character is vying for a college scholarship – which would be the first for any zombie – and is also dealing with the reality that the girl he loves might have to leave the planet for an unknown amount of time. While the movie is fun and upbeat because it is made for the Disney Channel’s younger audience, it successfully deals with some heavier themes.

…stands up against some of the classics…

A lot of teen rom-coms that use the high school milestone of Prom as their endpoint tend to use a handful of familiar tropes. What keeps new viewers watching them is how they manage to make those tropes entertaining. Because Prom Pact aired on Disney Channel, it does not utilize some of the more mature storylines that other movies would, but it still stands up against some of the classics with its story of friendship and the natural chemistry among the cast members.

The movie sees a young girl form a bond with a more connected boy while she is obsessed with getting into Harvard. Though she is solely focused on college, she makes a pact to attend Prom with her best friend, played by Manheim. Manheim’s character is able to connect with his crush and help his best friend through her troubles despite the many conflicts that crop up throughout the movie.

One of the reasons Prom Pact is so refreshing is that the two leads remain the best of friends throughout the movie. So many rom-coms would have seen them fall for one another instead of their other love interests in the script, but Prom Pact keeps them platonic, and is better for it. Manheim plays the rom-com elements well, making the dialogue seem natural and his comedic timing impeccable.

Prom Pact was nominated for a Children’s and Family Emmy for Outstanding Fiction Special.

Zombies was originally conceived as a television series called Zombies & Cheerleaders, but the pilot was never ordered to series. Instead, Disney Channel opted to make a movie, which then expanded into several more projects. Zombies started a whole new franchise for the network and gave Manheim his big break on screen.

Manheim earned a nomination for Outstanding Performances in a Leading Role for the New York Musical Theater Festival in 2017 for his work in Generation Me, right before he landed his breakthrough role in Zombies.

Zombies follows cheerleader Addision (Meg Donnelly) and football player Zed (Manheim) as they fall for one another and try to get their respective friends to get along. The catch, of course, is that Zed is a zombie and Addison is not. Their town has a history of keeping humans and zombies separate after an incident years ago, and humans tend to not be so keen on the zombies in town.

The movie has a thinly veiled take on racism and acceptance, which adults will likely see while kids might not. It works to both teach kids to be more accepting and to entertain them as the songs are catchy, the chemistry between the cast members is solid, and the performances are almost as perfect as the Disney Channel gets when it comes to their impressive slate of musicals.

The same year that Manheim appeared in Prom Pact to play the best friend of Peyton Elizabeth Lee, he also recurred in her Disney+ series. Doogie Kamealoha, MD is inspired by the TV classic Doogie Howser in which a teenage boy becomes a doctor. Here, however, the title character is a teenage girl and the series is set in Hawaii. Not only does that allow the writers to explore a bit more of Hawaiian culture, but the series also makes an effort to include more stories outside of medicine.

Manheim’s addition to the series in season 2 actually allows the medical and teenage worlds of the show to collide. He plays a patient of Lee’s Lahela who has been in and out of the hospital with a form of leukemia. He is also Lee’s love interest.

Doogie Kamealoha, MD was nominated for four Children’s and Family Emmys during its run.

Manheim’s work as Nico is great. He’s a teenager who lives life on the edge because he is hyper-aware of how short life can be. He also has not had the greatest family life with a father who left and a mother who has been in and out of rehab. While his role is still a relatively lighthearted one, Manheim gets to play to more serious subject matter than Disney usually has their younger actors do.

Usually, sequels are seen as less than the original movie, but Zombies 2 is an interesting addition to the franchise as this is the movie that really helps to establish the wider lore of the movies and animated series.

In Zombies 2, humans and zombies are mostly living in peace in Seabrook as the teenagers are getting ready for Prawn, their version of a high school Prom. When werewolves are discovered in the forest, however, new anti-monster laws are put in place. The werewolves are intent on restoring power to the moonstone that helps protect them, ignoring the laws, seeking out Addison for help, and not attempting to assimilate in the ways that zombies have.

Again, the movie provides a great allegory for prejudice, and more specifically, for fighting racism. While the zombies have a slightly more passive approach in the first movie, the werewolves take things head-on in the second. Manheim gets to play up Zed’s jealousy here as the werewolves initially think Addison might be the leader they’re looking for, which allows him to flex his acting abilities in the franchise a bit more.

Manheim plays another teenage football player in School Spirits. This time around, however, his character is not a zombie but a ghost in the Paramount+ original series.

The series follows Maddie (Peyton List) as she adjusts to being a spirit stuck in her high school. She meets several other spirits, all of whom died on the school’s property before her, and begins looking into what she believes is her murder. Her investigation alongside her new ghostly friends, however, reveals that Maddie’s “death” may be more complicated than she initially suspects.

Manheim’s Wally is a initially a stereotypical high school jock out of a teen movie. He does not exactly get along with the other teen spirits he attends an afterlife support group with, but he does connect with Maddie. The closer they become, the more about his past is revealed, and it becomes much easier for the audience to empathize with him. Milo Manheim shines as the layers to Wally are peeled back to reveal his vulnerabilities.
