Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) is a popular mobile game developed by Moonton, a subsidiary of ByteDance. It is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game that was released in 2016 and has become popular in Southeast Asia. The game involves two teams of five players fighting in real-time, quick matches, and matches last about 10 minutes. The goal is to fight in three lanes, destroy the enemy’s tower and protect your own tower, following traditional MOBA gameplay.
Notably, MLBB does not involve hero training or pay-to-play elements. Winning or losing depends on the player’s skills, abilities, and strategic thinking. Moonton entered the esports scene with the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Pro League (MPL), which serves as a qualifier for the Mobile Legends World Championship. The game also participated in the esports competition at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Originally titled Mobile Legends: 5v5 MOBA, the game was criticized for its similarities to League of Legends, leading to copyright infringement lawsuits from Riot Games in 2017 and 2022. In 2020, the game was banned in India along with other Chinese apps due to government security concerns. Despite these challenges, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has continued to thrive as a popular and competitive mobile gaming experience.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Gameplay
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is a free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game designed for mobile phones. Players control characters called heroes, each with unique abilities, and choose from six classes: tank, shooter, assassin, warrior, mage, and support. In-game purchases include characters and skins, but winning or losing matches does not affect a player’s ranking in Classic Mode.
The main gameplay is a real-time duel between two teams of five. The goal is to destroy the opponent’s base, which is achieved by destroying turrets in three lines: the gold line (upper), the experience line (lower), and the middle line. Players must work together and use soldiers to attack turrets to eventually destroy the enemy base.
Ranked mode has 7 tiers, from Warrior to Myth, and matches are based on current tier. Teams can only be formed with players of similar or close tiers. Arcade mode offers extra games during special events, including features like Brawl, where players can get random heroes and single lanes. Magic Chess is an auto-battle mode that involves strategically placing Mobile Legends heroes on a chess-like battlefield.
Other modes include Chaos mode (with enhanced hero abilities), Death Battle mode where different heroes are used in one match, and Mirror mode (where teams use the same hero). Mobile Legends also offers AI battles, custom 5v5 matches, and hero training, allowing players to enjoy a variety of gaming experiences.
