My Happy Marriage Episode 1 Plot
In the first episode of the Netflix animated series My Happy Marriage, we are introduced to the main character Miyo Saimori and her difficult life. The episode begins with a poignant scene of Miyo recalling childhood memories, symbolizing her disconnect from the past and desire for happiness.
Nishimori Kako’s eldest daughter Miyo is an obedient and kind-hearted person who lost her mother when she was young. From there, her life takes a dark turn as she is tortured and abused by her stepmother, Hinch, and stepsister, Kaya. They treat her like a servant, forcing her to do menial jobs and constantly belittling her.
Miyo lived among the other servants, accepting her fate and enduring the abuse without complaint. Her stepsister Kaya is particularly cruel and takes pleasure in torturing Miyo for even the slightest inconvenience. For example, when Miyo prepares green tea for Kaya, she throws the cup on the floor, claiming it tastes bad. Miyo’s father, Kako, shows indifference to her abuse, further fueling her sense of hopelessness.
Throughout the series, we also learn about Koji, the son of the head of the Ryusei family, who is deeply in love with Miyo. Koji goes out of his way to bring her little joys, such as caramel milk chocolate, in the hope of rescuing her from the torment she endures. Miyo shares the same wish for a better life, but she hides her feelings, fearing that the happiness she hopes for will only bring her more pain.
However, everything changed when Koji came to Nissen’s house wearing a suit and bringing a proposal letter. Miyo suspects that he is here to propose to her, but she is hesitant to get her hopes too high because of past experiences. Eventually, her father Kanoko called her and wanted to talk to her. With intense anxiety, Miyo walked into Shikako’s room, prepared for the news she expected to hear.
To Miyo’s surprise and sadness, Koji’s proposal was not for her, but for her stepsister Kaye. Koji did not want such an arrangement, but for the sake of the family’s prosperity, he was forced to follow his father’s instructions. However, there is a glimmer of hope as Koji’s father reveals that marriage arrangements will also be made for Miyo, but with another man. This could be her chance to escape an abusive home.
Miyo resigned herself to the belief that her fiancé Kudo Seiji would be an old man who would abuse her. She has lost faith in finding true happiness and expects more difficulties in life. The memory of her mother’s love and affection haunts her, and she longs for that warmth and connection.
The episode ends with Miyo preparing to embark on her journey to her fiancé’s house. She puts on her mother’s kimono, finding comfort and strength in the memories it brings. An old servant kindly provided her with rice balls to sustain her on her journey. Miyo was determined and prepared, mentally preparing herself for what was about to happen.
