National Magazine Awards
The National Magazine Awards, also known as the Ellie Awards, recognize excellence in print and digital publications. They honor outstanding achievements in editorial goals, innovative technology, enterprise, and design. Originally focused on print magazines, the awards now recognize quality journalism in all media. Sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and administered in New York City, the awards have been held annually since 1966.

The Ellie Awards are judged by magazine journalists and educators, with more than 300 judges participating each year. Judges select finalists and winners from each category, each with its own jury. Finalists receive a certificate of recognition, while winners receive a replica of Alexander Calder’s “Elephant” sculpture, which has been the symbol of the award since 1970. Notable changes include expanding the design and photography categories to include digital work, and suspending the fiction award in 2017.

The 2024 National Magazine Awards are designed to advance journalism and highlight the value of magazines and websites to readers and advertisers. Originally focused on print magazines, the awards now celebrate storytelling in any medium, including newspapers and newsletters.
Sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and administered jointly by ASME and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, the awards recognize publications that excel in editorial purpose, innovation, enterprise and design.
2024 National Magazine Awards Event Details
- Date: Tuesday, April 2, 2024
- Time: 5:30pm to 9:00pm
- Location: New York Terminal 5
- Recognition: Finalists in each category will receive a certificate of recognition and the winner will be awarded the “Ellie” Award, inspired by Alexander Calder’s stabilized sculpture “Elephant Walks.”
- Other Awards: Winners of the ASME Fiction Award, ASME Design, Photography and Illustration Award, and ASME NEXT Award will also be recognized during the event.
