Omar Abdullah Omar Abdullah was born on March 10, 1970 in Rochford, Essex, England. He came from a very important political family. His grandfather, Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, known as the “Lion of Kashmir”, was one of the first important political figures of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1939, he founded the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference. His father, Farooq Abdullah, served as chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir on several occasions. His mother, Mollie Abdullah, was British, so Omar Abdullah received a multicultural education.

Umar completed his schooling from Burnhall School in Srinagar and later joined Lawrence School in Sanawa, Himachal Pradesh. Omar later graduated from Sydenham College, Mumbai with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He subsequently obtained an MBA from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland.
Get involved in politics
Umar began his political career when he was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha in 1998, becoming the youngest MP from Lal Chowk constituency. He was re-elected in 1999 and was appointed Union Minister of Commerce and Industry by the Vajpayee government. In 2001, he was appointed Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs.

In 2009, 38-year-old Omar Abdullah became the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, becoming the youngest Chief Minister to hold the position. His tenure was fraught with many challenges: political unrest and security concerns. He resigned from the post in early 2015 when his party lost its majority in state parliamentary elections.
Current issues
Omar was arrested under preventive detention after Article 370 was abrogated in August 2019. In the 2024 polls, he remained a Lok Sabha member from Baramulla but lost to engineer Sheikh Rashid by a huge margin.
