Orchestra in the Dark
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, also known as OMD, are an English electronic band formed in 1978. The band originally formed in Wirral, Merseyside, with the main songwriters being Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys.

They joined Martin Cooper and Stuart Kershaw to complete the band. OMD are considered pioneers of electronic music, fusing experimental sounds with catchy pop tunes. They were part of the synth-pop movement and rose to fame in the American MTV era.
Their debut single, “Electricity”, was released in 1979. OMD rose to fame in Europe with the anti-war song “Enola Gay” in 1980. Their album Architecture & Morality and its hit singles furthered their success. However, their 1983 experimental album Dazzle Ships was poorly received. In 1984, they shifted to a more radio-friendly style with Junk Culture, which found success in the United States, including the hit “If You Leave”, which was featured in the film Pretty in Pink.
After resolving their creative differences, Humphries and others formed a new band in 1989, with McCluskey becoming the sole member of OMD. They returned with a new lineup and explored dance-pop sounds with albums such as Sugar Tax in 1991.
Despite their initial success, OMD struggled with changing musical trends and disbanded in 1996. They reunited in 2006 to focus on their earlier experimental music. OMD had several hits in the UK and US and was influential in the synth-pop genre.
