Paul Stephen Luther was born on April 6, 1969, in Passaic, New Jersey, to English-born Jewish parents.

His father, Michael Ladd, was a historical tour guide and former vice president of Trans World Airlines, and his mother, Gloria Irene Granville, was a sales manager for KSMO-TV in Kansas City, Missouri.

Rader’s parents were both from London, his father from Edgware and his mother from Surbiton, descendants of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants to the UK from Belarus, Poland and Russia.

Rudd’s grandfather changed his paternal family name from Rudnitsky to Rudd. His maternal family name was Goldstein, and his parents were second cousins.

Growing up, Ladd attended a bar mitzvah in Ontario, Canada, and began to enjoy reading British comics such as Beano and The Dandy, which his uncle sent him from England.

When he was ten years old, due to his father’s profession, Ladd’s family moved to Lenexa, Johnson County, Kansas, and briefly lived in Anaheim, California for three years.

In Kansas, Ladd attended Broadmoor Junior High School and graduated in 1987 from Shawnee Mission West High School.
