There is also a shorter version of the PlayStation Portable called Persona 3 Portable, which was released in Japan in 2009, North America in 2010, and Europe in 2011. This version was subsequently brought to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in 2023. The remastered version of the original game Persona 3 Reload will launch in February 2024 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

In Persona 3, you play as a high school student in the Specialized Extracurricular Enforcement Team (SEES), a group that investigates a strange time called the Dark Hour. During this time, SEES has access to Tartarus, a large tower filled with creatures known as Shadows. SEES members use a psychic manifestation called a Persona to combat these shadows, which they summon through the use of a special thing called an Evoker. In addition to the role-playing component, Persona 3 also has simulation elements. You spend each day of the school year forming relationships that make your character stronger in battle.

People mostly like Persona 3. Critics liked the social component, although some found the combat and locations a bit repetitive. Persona 3 FES added more story after the original game, but received feedback that it didn’t have a simulation component. There are other games that continue the SEES story, such as Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Persona 3 has many things related to it, such as rhythm games, soundtracks, concerts, radio dramas, comics, anime series, and a series of animated movies.

In addition to scripted events, you can choose how to spend your time each day, which affects your character attributes: Scholarship, Charisma, and Courage. At night, you can visit the main dungeon, Tartarus, to build experience and items for your party. On the full moon day, there will be a boss battle to advance the story.

The main feature of the game is the characters, the creatures associated with the tarot cards. Each character has strengths, weaknesses, and different abilities. While other characters have their own personas, the protagonist can use multiple personas in combat. You can create new characters by fusing existing characters. Social Links are new to the series and represent connections formed with characters, each linked to a tarot card. Spending time with them will increase your social connection ranking, granting bonuses when creating a persona for that tarot deck. Negative behavior can destroy or reverse social connections.

Tartarus is the main dungeon and is visited at night. Players explore, split party members, and fight shadows. Boss floors and story progression affect progression. Spending too much time in Tartarus can make a character tired or sick, affecting performance. Combat begins when you touch a shadow, using a turn-based system with physical and elemental attacks. Exploit weaknesses to allow your character to knock down enemies and gain extra turns. Win battles to earn experience points, and level up your character to gain better stats and abilities.
