How to play Pokémon Unite

Pokémon Unite offers a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) experience where two teams of 5 players compete in fast-paced matches lasting 10 minutes. The main goal is to accumulate the highest total score at the end of the match to win, with ties being resolved by the team that reaches the final score first.

Surrender is an option if a majority of members of one side agree, but only halfway through the match. In this unique MOBA game, players control initially weaker Pokémon, increasing their power and moves by capturing wild Pokémon, assisting in defeating them, scoring goals, and knocking out enemy player Pokémon.

The traditional “type” system (which determines the effectiveness of Pokémon) is gone in favor of an innovative “combination move” mechanic, similar to ultimate moves in other MOBA games. Each Pokémon has a unique combination move that is unlocked at a certain level. The game features special events with different rules, as well as a quick battle mode for 5-minute matches on a smaller map with changed rules.

What makes Pokémon Unite unique is that it does away with the in-game scoreboard that can cause players to quit the game out of frustration, and instead uses timed announcements to show team performance, adding a strategic layer to the gaming experience. With over 50 playable Pokémon, Pokémon Unite offers fans of the series a rich and exciting gaming experience.

Pokemon Unite Development

Developed by Chinese video game developer Tianmei Technology, “Pokémon Unite” began its closed beta test in January 2021, initially limited to a select group of players in China.

Then, in February 2021, The Pokémon Company revealed plans for another closed beta test in March 2021, this time targeting Canadian Android smartphone users.

However, the announcement of Pokémon Unite has sparked controversy, sparking discussion about whether it can bring a new competitive gaming scene to a new audience. The announcement video on the Pokémon Company’s YouTube channel has gained notoriety for being the most disliked video.

Despite initially mixed reactions, the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon Unite was officially released on July 21, 2021, with the iOS and Android versions following shortly thereafter on September 22, 2021.

Developer TiMi says it is committed to continued development of the game after launch, and promises to introduce new playable Pokémon through downloadable content. The first batch of new Pokémon will be available to players on July 28, 2021. As Pokémon Unite continues to develop, it is committed to engaging players through constant updates and enhancements to ensure the gaming experience continues to evolve and delight.
