Raymond Anthony Lewis Jr. (born May 15, 1975) is a retired American football linebacker best known for his stellar 17-year career with the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League (NFL). He honed his skills at the University of Miami, where he earned All-American honors.
Lewis was drafted by the Ravens in the first round of the 1996 NFL Draft and quickly became a mainstay on the team’s defense, leading the team in interceptions an impressive 14 times starting in his rookie season. Despite a legal challenge in 2000, Lewis bounced back the following season, winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year title and leading the Ravens to a historic victory in Super Bowl XXXV.
Lewis demonstrated outstanding leadership and defensive ability, earning a reputation as one of the most powerful linebackers in NFL history. Although Lewis missed most of the 2012 regular season due to a triceps tear, he returned to lead the Ravens to another Super Bowl championship, which was also his final NFL appearance. In 2018, Lewis was officially enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame on the fifth anniversary of his retirement.
