The movie Red One includes fantastic quotes that will make audiences laugh, smile, and reflect on the meaning of Christmas long after the movie ends. The action-comedy film offers a new take on the “saving Christmas” subgenre, telling the story of a naughty lister named Jack O’Malley who must work together with the head E.L.F., Callum, to save Santa Claus from an evil witch. Despite Red One’s A-list cast and a fast-paced story, the movie wasn’t well received by critics. Still, the audiences pulled through, making the Chris Evans movie one of the 25 highest-grossing movies of 2024.

It’s easy to see why viewers enjoyed Red One so much. The movie has polar bear bodyguards, hilarious antiheroes, and prison snowglobes that capture the magic of the season in a whole new way. All the visual and narrative elements of the story are also supported by the dialogue, which perfectly balances wit and sentimentality. Many of Red One’s quotes will stick in viewers’ minds long after they leave the theaters, a sign of an excellent script. Ultimately, these elements combine to make Red One a future cult-classic Christmas movie.
10 “I’m Not Gonna Like You. I Can Tell Right Away; Out Of Everyone Here, I Like You The Least.”

One aspect of Red One that even the critics appreciated is the chemistry and the repartee between Dwayne Johnson’s Callum and Chris Evans’ Jack O’Malley. The two actors bounce off one another, providing excellent comedic timing that’s enjoyable in even the film’s weakest moments. The scene where they first meet sets expectations high for the rest of the film. Jack and Callum’s introduction pulls fundamental elements from the buddy film subgenre, such as the contrasting personalities and a meet-ugly.
The characters are immediately repulsed by one another, with Jack saying this perfect quotation that sets the expectations of what’s to come. He inherently knows he and Callum won’t get along. By including a meet-ugly instead of a meet-cute, the characters have more room to grow, with the duo developing a strong bond by the end of Red One.

One of the funniest but least narratively significant lines in Red One occurs when the management team discusses how to make everything run better at the North Pole. They bring up Phil, an employee wearing everyone thin because of his complaints about the wrapping department not doing well enough for his ribbons department to run smoothly. When Santa recommends moving Phil out of the ribbons department, Mrs. Claus says this hilarious quip.
The statement is laughable, not because there’s anything wrong with his love of ribbons, but because that kind of emotional attachment and narrow focus on a topic is so relatable. The fact that Phil named his dog Ribbons shows how passionate he feels about the decorative fabric. He might seem overbearing to some others for his perfectionism, but it’s understandable how he becomes so entrenched in a special interest that it’s all he cares about.
8 “No, It Doesn’t Work On Everything. No, You Can’t Try It. No, You Can’t Drive. No More Questions, Now Get In.”

When it comes to Chris Evans movie roles, Red One’s Jack O’Malley is more Johnny Storm than Steve Rogers, bringing the same kind of crass and lovable annoyingness that makes the Human Torch such a popular character in Marvel. Jack has a roguish charm and childishness that seems to get on the nerves of Callum. The fact that he’s ignorant of the world of magic increases the tension between them.
This Red One quotation perfectly exemplifies how the duo interacts throughout most of the movie. Jack pushes Callum’s buttons by pestering him with questions and snarky comments. Callum, in turn, gets super annoyed and short with him. In this case, he didn’t even let Jack ask the questions before responding, anticipating everything he would say. Amusingly, Jack’s reaction seems to confirm that Callum was correct.
7 “I Love The Kids. It’s The Grownups That Are Killing Me.”
Said By Callum To Santa Claus

Early in Red One, Callum announces his intent to leave his job, and Santa has a frank conversation with him about why. The Christmas icon says that they do the job for the kids, which he knows Callum loves. The head member of E.L.F. responds with this quotation, which is a poignant statement about the differences between children and adults when it comes to Christmas. Young children have an innocence about them, appreciating the magic of the holiday. Until they’re taught otherwise, there’s an appreciation for gifts.

Krampus is easily the best part of Red One, with his appearance in the film being what the film needed more of if it wanted to succeed.

Meanwhile, adults experience stressors of responsibility and expectation, worsened by the rampant consumerism related to the holiday. Unfortunately, this kind of stress creates issues like anger, entitlement, and resentment that not only negatively influence their Christmas but that of people around them. It’s easy to understand why Callum would say this and why it would resonate with many people.

6 “First Of All, Sorry. Second, Could You Be More Specific? Honestly, You Could Be Talking About 12 Different Things Right Now.”
Said By Jack O’Malley To Zoe
Image via Amazon MGM Studios
Many of the best Christmas movies center on antiheroes who get a redemption arc when they see the error of their way. Prime examples of this include Scrooge from A Christmas Carol, Fred Claus in the titular movie, and The Grinch from How The Grinch Stole Christmas. However, most of these characters don’t acknowledge their wrongdoing, setting Jack O’Malley in Red One apart from these characters.
Chris Evans’ character readily admits to his wrongdoing, even if he tries to get out of the consequences of his actions. He’s upfront about the fact that he’s a mercenary and will work for whoever will pay him. The fact that he says this quote when told, “We know what you did,” also shows just how aware he is of his actions. It also displays his quippy, snarky sense of humor that continues throughout the rest of the movie.

5 “Is This Something That Happens To You A Lot?” “Unexplained Piano In The Middle Of A German Highway? No, This Is Rare.”
Said By Jack O’Malley To Callum
Custom Image by Cooper Hood
In many ways, Jack O’Malley serves as the stand-in for the audience. He’s an ordinary man who makes questionable decisions and gets thrust into a bizarre world of snowmen, Santa Claus, and magic. He reacts like the average person would if put in such a strange situation.
By the point in the Red One soundtrack and story where the piano starts playing “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from The Nutcracker, Jack has gotten past complete disbelief and has accepted that strange things will happen. As such, he’s not necessarily shocked by the piano playing itself. However, that doesn’t change the confusion of a self-playing piano in the middle of a German highway.

This Red One question is something almost any person in this situation would ask, making it one of the best lines. It has the effect of breaking the fourth wall, bringing the audience into the scene, without actually breaking the fourth wall. Surprisingly, Callum answers that this is not a regular occurrence, even in the world of magic.
4 “The World Is A Mess Because They Fear Nothing. I’m Going To Give Them Something To Fear.”
Said By Gryla, The Witch

Red One’s villain, Gryla, is challenging to hate at first because she has solid logic dictating her choices. She doesn’t think naughty people should be rewarded for their bad actions – though Gryla has a highly stringent definition of “naughty.” Her choices, though misguided, at least have a good intention underneath them. However, a turning point for the character is when she says this bone-chilling line.

Actor Kiernan Shipka delivers the Red One quote in a way that’s utterly devoid of empathy – a small acting choice that raises the character’s threat level. Gryla believes every word she’s saying, and the message makes it clear that she’s not just looking to withhold rewards but dole out cruel punishments that inflict fear. Interestingly, her nefarious plan of trapping individuals in isolated prisons, which feels especially cruel, is toned down from the original lore, where the ogress makes naughty children into stew.

Like most family Christmas movies, Red One has sentimental moments that send important messages to the audience about life. These kernels of wisdom function as a thesis statement for the entire film. In the scene where Callum explains why he’s quitting, Santa says this crucial line about change. He’s trying to convey to Callum that they aren’t responsible for others’ decisions, but they can help make space for growth. Though it’s simplistic, this message becomes the core of the plot and character arcs.
Gryla, the Krampus, and Jack O’Malley all make poor choices from the start, but they’re given space and encouragement from the “good guys” to choose differently. Unfortunately, Gryla decides to take actions to harm others, resulting in her downfall. However, by the end, Krampus and Jack O’Malley make productive choices that will help themselves and others, proving that people can change when they’re allowed to.
2 “Nothing Like A Crowded Mall 2 Days Before Christmas”

For any last-minute shoppers and retail workers in the audience, this quotation from Red One will hit home in a hilarious and painful way. It’s well-known that the last few days before Christmas are chaotic and hellish for anyone with a customer-facing job, as shoppers frequently become rude and entitled due to the increased stress of the impending holiday.
Related Why Red One’s Reviews Are So Bad
Red One, starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, is an action-packed Christmas movie that unfortunately seems to be on critics’ naughty list.

These few days are almost as bad as Black Friday. While any store is terrible in these circumstances, the mall is even worse because multiple stores are packed into one building, making it the ideal place to shop for different people. The lights, crowds, sounds, and smells in a mall are a sensory nightmare, making it nearly impossible to enjoy.

Ultimately, this quote and the surrounding scene are a perfect way to set up Gryla’s motivation in Red One. The problem is so ubiquitous that she doesn’t need to be in that specific mall to understand that “naughty” people are ruining everything.
1 “For A Guy Like Me, There Are Worse Ways To Go Out Than Trying To Save Santa Claus.”
Said By Jack O’Malley To Callum
Image via Amazon MGM Studios
At the climax of Red One, Callum tries to send Jack O’Malley away from the action so that he will stay safe. However, he rejects the order, explaining his decision with this quote. The statement is perfect for two big reasons. Firstly, this start of the sentence is a significant turning point for the character who has taken destructive and hurtful actions his whole life. His conversation with his son clearly got through to him.

Secondly, there’s something very human about the statement, “There are worse ways to go out…” The common phrase includes gallows humor infused with a bittersweet recognition that there are many bad things in the world that can kill a person. However, it also has a devil-may-care aura that fits with this moment of heroism in Red One. Jack recognizes he’s doing something stupidly dangerous, but it doesn’t matter because he’s at least doing it to help save Christmas.
