These tableaux are a prominent feature of the annual Republic Day parade, held on January 26, to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950.

The themes for Republic Day tableaux are determined through a structured process managed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

1) Selection Process

• Proposal Submission: Interested parties must submit a concept note along with design blueprints by a specified deadline. For 2025, this deadline was November 10, 2023.
• Expert Committee Evaluation: A committee of experts from various fields—such as art, culture, and architecture—reviews the submissions. This committee conducts multiple rounds of meetings to assess the proposals based on criteria like visual appeal, thematic relevance, and details.

2) Phased Assessment:

• Stage 1: Initial sketches and designs are scrutinised. The committee may suggest modifications.
• Stage 2: Three-dimensional models of the proposals are evaluated. If approved, these models proceed to fabrication.
• Final Selection: The committee has the final authority to approve or reject tableaux based on their evaluations, ensuring that selected designs are unique and eco-friendly.

3) Theme Determination

The theme for each year’s tableaux is typically announced in advance and reflects current national priorities or celebrations. 

For 2025, the theme is “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Heritage and Development), which emphasises both cultural heritage and progress.

How Do States and Union Territories Prepare Their Tableaux?

The preparation of tableaux for the Republic Day parade in India involves a structured and detailed process overseen by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). Here’s an overview of how states and union territories (UTs) prepare their tableaux:

1) Proposal Submission

• Initiation: The selection process begins around September each year when the MoD invites states, UTs, and central ministries to submit proposals for their tableaux. This includes sending concept notes and design blueprints by a specified deadline, typically in early November.
• Eligibility: All states and UTs are encouraged to participate, but not all proposals may be accepted. A rigorous evaluation follows the submission phase.

2) Evaluation Process

• Expert Committee: An expert committee comprising distinguished individuals from various fields such as art, culture, and architecture evaluates the proposals. This committee is led by the MoD and conducts multiple rounds of assessments.

3) Stages of Evaluation:

• Stage 1: Initial assessment of design sketches and concepts occurs. The committee may suggest modifications or reject proposals at this stage.
• Stage 2: Accepted designs are developed into three-dimensional models, which are further evaluated. The committee can recommend changes before final approval.
• Criteria for Selection: The evaluation focuses on several factors:

• Zonal System: States and UTs are divided into six zones (Northern, Central, Eastern, Western, Southern, and North Eastern) to ensure a balanced representation during the parade.

• Design Specifications: The tableaux must be colourful, simple, and easily comprehensible without requiring extensive explanations. Writing or logos are generally prohibited except for the names of states/UTs displayed in Hindi on the front and English on the back.
• Size Restrictions: Each tableau is designed to fit specific dimensions as it is transported on a tractor-trailer provided by the MoD. The maximum size allowed is approximately 16 feet high, 45 feet long, and 14 feet wide.
• Use of Technology: Recent guidelines encourage incorporating modern technologies such as robotics, augmented reality, and eco-friendly materials into the designs to enhance visual impact.

5) Final Selection

The final selection culminates after several rounds of discussions between the expert committee and representatives from participating states/UTs. Only those tableaux that meet all criteria are selected for display during the Republic Day parade on January 26 each year.

Highlights of the 76th Republic Day Parade 2025

India’s 76th Republic Day Parade will showcase cutting-edge defense technology and the spirit of national pride, featuring several first-time displays. Here are the key highlights of the grand event:

1. Defense Platforms on Display:

India will present advanced defense systems, including BrahMos, Pinaka, and Akash. For the first time, the Army’s Battle Surveillance System ‘Sanjay’ and DRDO’s surface-to-surface tactical missile ‘Pralay’ will make an appearance in the parade.

Other notable entries include the T-90 ‘Bhishma’ tanks, Sarath infantry vehicles (BMP-II), Short Span Bridging System 10m, Nag Missile System, multi-barrel rocket launcher ‘Agnibaan,’ and the light specialist vehicle ‘Bajrang.’

 

2. Tri-Services Tableau:

A unique tri-services tableau will depict the spirit of joint operations among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It will showcase a battlefield scenario integrating land, water, and air capabilities, featuring the indigenous Arjun battle tank, Tejas fighter jet, and advanced light helicopter. The theme of the tableau is ‘Shashakt aur Surakshit Bharat’ (Strong and Secure India).

 

3. DRDO Tableau:

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will present its tableau titled ‘Raksha Kavach – Multi-Layer Protection Against Multi-Domain Threats.’

 

4. Honoring Martyrs and Parade Opening:

The celebrations will begin with Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying tribute to India’s martyrs at the National War Memorial. The ceremonial parade, lasting 90 minutes, will start with the National Salute and reflect the nation’s journey of heritage and progress.

 

5. Aerial Displays and Cultural Performances:

Aircraft such as the C-130J Super Hercules, C-295, C-17 Globemaster, P-8I, MiG-29, and Su-30 will participate in the celebrations. The parade will open with 300 cultural artists playing the iconic tune ‘Sare Jahan Se Achha’ on instruments representing India’s diversity.

 

6. Leadership of the Parade:

The Parade Commander will be Lt Gen Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area. The Second-in-Command will be Maj Gen Sumit Mehta, Chief of Staff (COS), Delhi Area. Two Param Vir Chakra awardees (Kargil war heroes) and one Ashok Chakra awardee will also be part of the event.

 

7. Indian Air Force Flypast:

The flypast will feature 40 aircraft from the Indian Air Force, along with three Dornier aircraft from the Indian Coast Guard.

 

8. Indian Army Representation:

The Indian Army will participate with a mounted column, eight mechanized columns, and six marching contingents. The mounted column will include the 61 Cavalry.

 

9. Marching Columns:

Marching contingents will feature units from the Brigade of the Guards, Jat Regiment, Garhwal Rifles Regiment, J&K Light Infantry (JAKLI) Regiment, and the Corps of Engineers. Capt Ritika Khareta will lead a contingent of the Corps of Signals, being the only woman in her group.

 

10. Motorcycle Display Team:

Daredevils from the Corps of Signals will perform a motorcycle display. Capt Ashish Rana will lead the team, with Capt Dimple Singh Bhati as the second-in-command.
