They began working on Resident Evil 4 for the PlayStation 2 in 1999. They had some different ideas but didn’t implement them. The first version was directed by Hideki Kamiya, but Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami thought it was too different, so in 2001 it became another game called Devil May Cry. They tried a few more times until Shinji Mikami took over. This is the version we got. Capcom announced the game as part of the Capcom Five project, in which they teamed up with Nintendo to create five exclusive games for the GameCube.
Resident Evil 4 received critical acclaim for its story, gameplay, graphics, voice acting, and characters. It is considered by many to be one of the best video games of all time and won many awards in 2005. They released it on different platforms and it became extremely popular, selling 12.3 million copies by December 2022. It even influenced other games like Gears of War, Dead Space, and The Last of Us. They made a new version of Resident Evil 4, called the Remastered Edition, and it will launch in 2023.

Resident Evil 4 gameplay
In Resident Evil 4, you play as protagonist Leon S. Kennedy and watch the action from a third-person perspective. Unlike earlier games in the series, this one is more action and shooting with fewer scary moments. The camera follows Leon from behind, and as you aim the weapon it gets closer, like looking over his shoulder. There’s no reticle; instead, each gun has a laser sight. You have more shooting options, like making enemies stumble by shooting them at their feet, or making them drop their weapons by shooting their arms. You can also shoot down things thrown at you, such as axes or scythes.
The game has interactive controls depending on the situation. You can do things like kick off ladders, jump out of windows, dodge attacks, or perform finishing moves on weakened enemies. Quick events occur and you press buttons displayed on the screen to do things like dodge falling boulders or fight off enemies.

The main enemy is the aggressive villager Los Ganados. Unlike traditional zombies in the series, these villagers can hide, use weapons, and work together. Village leaders can transform into monsters during combat. Other enemies include the Regenerator, a mutant creature with powerful regenerative abilities, the troll-like creature El Gigante, and the giant sea creature Del Lago.
Resident Evil 4 Plot
In 2004, U.S. agent Leon S. Kennedy was ordered to rescue the president’s daughter, Ashley Graham, who had been kidnapped by a cult in a Spanish village. The villagers, controlled by a parasite called Las Plagas, attack Leon. Leon was captured and injected with a parasite, escaping with former researcher Luis Serra. They rescue Ashley from a church where cult leader Sadler plans to use her to infect the President of the United States.
After escaping, they face more challenges in a castle owned by Salazar, another cult member. Leon briefly met Ada Wong, who supported him. He defeated Salazar and continued his search on an island, discovering that his former comrade Crowther was also involved.
Crowther kidnaps Ashley to steal Sadler’s Plagas sample. With Ada’s help, Leon defeated Crowther, rescued Ashley, and eliminated the parasite. He confronts Sadler and kills him with the help of Ada, but Ada takes the sample and escapes in a helicopter. Leon and Ashley escape the exploding island on a motorboat.
