Who is Robert Herjavec?
Robert Herjavec was born on September 14, 1962, and is a well-known Croatian-Canadian businessman, investor, and television personality. Herjavec is from Varaždin, former Yugoslavia (now Croatia), and holds Canadian citizenship.
Educated at the University of Toronto, where he received his Bachelor of Arts, Herjavec’s entrepreneurial journey began with the founding of BRAK Systems, a Canadian company specializing in Internet security software integration.
In 2000, he successfully sold BRAK Systems to AT&T Canada (now Allstream Inc.) for $30.2 million. Despite this success, he founded the Herjavec Group in 2003, which has grown into one of Canada’s largest and most successful information technology and computer security companies.

- In the mid-1980s, Robert Herjavec worked as a third assistant director on several productions, including Cain & Abel and The Return of Billy Jack.
- He served as a field producer for Global Television during the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo.
- In between film productions, Herjavec applied for a position at Logiquest and offered to work for free for six months to secure the job.
- He initially worked as a waiter to pay the rent during his time at Logiquest and eventually became general manager.
- In 1990, after being fired from Logiquest, he founded BRAK Systems, a Canadian Internet security software integrator, in his basement.
- BRAK Systems was subsequently sold to AT&T Canada in March 2000 for $30.2 million.
- Herjavec then became vice president of sales at Ramp Network, which Nokia later acquired for $225 million.
- In 2003, he founded the Herjavec Group, a security solutions integrator and managed services provider, which has become the largest information technology security provider in Canada.
- The company has grown from three employees and $400,000 in sales in 2003 to $200 million in annual revenue.
- In October 2017, Herjavec was the target of a phishing attack by “email prankster” James Linton, who posed as the company’s CEO.

- He spent his childhood in Zbigniew, but his family left the country in 1970 when he was eight years old after his father was imprisoned for speaking out against the ruling system.
- Herjavec’s father, Vladimir, faced imprisonment 22 times for anti-communism, often criticizing communism while drunk.
- The family arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia with just a suitcase and $20.
- They eventually settled in Toronto, living in a family friend’s basement for 18 months.
- Adjusting to life in Toronto was a challenge for Herjavec, as he did not speak English and his financial situation was lower than his neighbours.
- Herjavec’s father found a job at a factory in Mississauga, making $76 a week.
- Despite the financial challenges, Herjavec’s father – a strong figure – had a major influence on him, instilling in him the values of resilience and courage.
- Herjavec experienced a formative event in his youth: a traveling salesman convinced his mother to buy a vacuum cleaner for $500, which made him vow that his family would never be taken advantage of again.
