Who is Robert Plant?

Robert Anthony Plant CBE (born 20 August 1948) is an English singer-songwriter. He rose to fame as the lead singer and songwriter for the rock band Led Zeppelin, a group he was a member of from its formation in 1968 until its breakup in 1980. After the breakup of Led Zeppelin, Plant began a successful solo career and has collaborated with artists such as Alison Krauss.

Plant grew up in the West Midlands and initially trained as a chartered accountant but left at 16 to sing in local blues bands, including Band of Joy with John Bonham. In 1968 he joined The Yardbirds (later renamed Led Zeppelin) and enjoyed huge success in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Plant was known for his charismatic stage presence, and his image as a frontman was compared to rock icons such as Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Jim Morrison and Freddie Mercury. After Led Zeppelin disbanded, he participated in various solo and group projects, most notably The Honeydrippers with Jimmy Page. In 1988, his solo album Now and Zen launched hit singles such as “Tall Cool One” and “Ship of Fools”.

In the 1990s, Plant teamed up with Page to form the duo Page and Plant, which won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1998. In 2007, he won a Grammy for his album Raising Sand with Alison Krauss. His achievements include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Led Zeppelin in 1995 and being named one of the best singers of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

Robert Plant’s career

Robert Anthony Plant was born on August 20, 1948 in West Bromwich, England, and was interested in singing and rock music from an early age. He grew up in Hailey Green, Worcestershire, and at the age of ten he was inspired by Elvis Presley and aspired to emulate him.

Plant dropped out of school as a teenager and developed a passion for blues music, influenced by artists such as Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson. Although he briefly wanted to become a chartered accountant, he left school after two weeks to join the blues music scene in the English Midlands. At 16, he left home to immerse himself in music, exploring different bands and expanding his knowledge of the blues and other influential genres.

Plant’s early blues music was influenced by artists such as Bucca White, Skip James, Jerry Miller and Sleepy John Estes. He worked various jobs to support his music career, such as working at Wimpey’s in Birmingham and Harry Sowin’s Woolworths. During this time, he recorded three singles with CBS Records and sang with different bands, including Crawling King Snakes, where he first met drummer John Bonham.

The turning point came when Plant and Bonham joined the Band of Joy, blending blues with the emerging psychedelic trend. This collaboration marked the beginning of Plant’s remarkable career, laying the foundation for his future success with Led Zeppelin and other bands.
