The 1996 film Swingers introduced Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau to the world. Directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), Swingers stars Favreau as Mike Peters, a struggling comedian who moves to Los Angeles after breaking up with his girlfriend. Vaughn plays his best friend, Trent Walker, a self-confident swinger. While Trent tries to help Mike’s depression issues by trying to pick up women with him, Mike constantly messes things up by talking about his ex.
Ron Livingston stars as another of Mike’s friends, Rob, who is also struggling to get acting jobs and is also new to Los Angeles. The film received mostly positive reviews, with praise going to Vaughn and Favreau’s chemistry and Favreau’s smart script. It was also a box office success based on the very low budget that Liman needed to make the movie, and it remains a cult classic, especially for fans of the two lead actors.

Directed by Jason Reitman in 2018, Tully stars Charlize Theron as Marlo, a woman with a third unplanned pregnancy with her husband, Drew. With a script written by Diablo Cody (her third collaboration with Reitman), the film is about Marlo’s friendship she develops with her night nanny, Tully (Mackenzie Davis), who is there more to help support Marlo than she is to just care for the new baby. While the film is mostly about Marlo and Tully’s relationship, Drew plays an important part in the story as the husband who doesn’t – but tries – to understand.
Critics praised Tully, awarding it an 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and praising Theron’s performance and the script’s look at the difficulties of motherhood and postpartum mental health. Theron earned a Golden Globes nomination for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical, while both Theron and Mackenzie Davis earned nominations from the Hollywood Critics Association Awards.

In 2023, Ron Livingston joined the DCU in a surprising move. In The Flash, he stars as Henry Allen, Barry Allen’s father. What makes this such a surprising casting moment was that he replaced Billy Crudup in the role after the latter actor played Henry in Justice League. Crudup had to drop out of the role when the film had scheduling conflicts with his TV series, The Morning Show. Livingston stepped in to replace him in the cast and was a big part of the story as Flash worked to get him cleared of killing his mother.
Critics were unkind to The Flash, although it had a lot of good things going for it. Michael Keaton returning to the Batman role decades after he played the Caped Crusader in 1989 and 1992 was a huge fan-friendly moment. The return of General Zod was also fun, but the CGI and complications with the time travel story turned away casual fans. It also didn’t help that the movie came out after the DCU announced it was rebooting, making many fans no longer care about this film. It received a 63% Rotten Tomatoes score, thanks to keeping the spirit of the character.

The ABC drama series A Million Little Things was a hugely popular show for the network, and Ron Livingston played one of the most important characters in the series. However, his character never appears in the main timeline of the show. A Million Little Things follows a tight-knit group of friends who start to question life and what they know when one of them dies by suicide. Livingston plays Jon Dixon, the successful businessperson who dies by suicide, leaving his friends shaken up and confused.
Livingston was a main character in the first season, mainly through flashback scenes, and a guest character in the second, third, and fifth seasons.
Livingston was a main character in the first season, mainly through flashback scenes, and a guest character in the second, third, and fifth seasons. While critics didn’t love it, giving it an overall 53% score for that first season, fans were all on board, giving it an 85% fresh rating. The main complaints were that the series was overwhelmed by its depressing storyline and weighty subject matter that rarely gave viewers a chance to breathe.

Adaptation was a comedy-drama film directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman. The movie is sort of based on The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean. Meryl Streep stars as Susan Orlean, the author of the novel that Charlie Kaufman is hired to write. Nicolas Cage stars as Kaufman as he works on figuring out how to adapt the novel to a screenplay. Cage also plays Donald Kaufman, Charlie’s twin brother. As for Ron Livingston, he stars as Marty Bowen, the real-life founder of Temple Hill Entertainment.
.While Livingston’s role was small, the film was a huge critical success as well as a small box office success.
The entire film is a meta picture, with Cage playing the actual Adaptation screenwriter who is struggling to adapt the screenplay for this very movie. While Livingston’s role was small, the film was a huge critical success as well as a small box office success. Critics awarded it a 91% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, calling it original and multi-layered. It also picked up four Oscar nominations, including a win for Chris Cooper.

The most famous movie that Ron Livingston is known for is the 1999 Mike Judge film Office Space. The film stars Livingston in the lead role as Peter Gibbons, a frustrated and unmotivated programmer at the software company Initech. Gibbons is hypnotized during a hypnotherapy session and is told to be completely relaxed and stop caring about anything. However, his therapist dies of a heart attack, and Gibbons leaves still under that suggestion just when his company brings in consultants to help downsize the business.
Shockingly, the consultants love the lackluster attitude he exhibits, and he is one of the people they choose not to fire. The entire movie is a smart satire of business life and being stuck in the corporate wheels. It has become one of the most beloved cult classics in cinema history. Critics praised the movie, with an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score, and Ron Livingston created the persona that he has continued to play over the years since.
