Constitution Day 2024: History
The Constitution of India was promulgated by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, the longest written constitution in the world, but it did not come into effect until January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as Republic Day.
The legal framework of the country is established by the Constitution, which also sets out the organizational structure of government, the division of powers between the central and state governments, and the fundamental rights of all individuals.
After the enactment of the Government of India Act, 1935, it became increasingly necessary to take a series of measures to establish India as a sovereign democratic republic. This led to the establishment of the Constituent Assembly in December 1946, chaired by the country’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
The 389-member Assembly includes prominent figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel and Dr BR Ambedkar. Dr. Prasad presided over the inaugural meeting held on December 9, 1946.
Parliament entrusted the task of drafting the constitution to a committee headed by Dr BR Ambedkar. After discussions in eleven meetings over two years, Ambedkar submitted the text in 1948. On November 26, 1949, the final version of the Constitution (with some modifications) was adopted.
As the world’s longest written constitution, the Indian Constitution originally contained 395 articles and 8 schedules, totaling approximately 145,000 words.

The Indian government came up with the idea of dedicating a day to the Constitution in 2015 in recognition of its historical importance. Subsequently, November 26 was officially declared as Constitution Day to commemorate the day when the Constitution was adopted by the Constitutional Convention in 1949.
