Saw 1 Ending Explained, Plot Twist, Cast and Trailer

Saw 1 (2004 movie)

“Saw” is a 2004 American horror film directed by James Wan, his debut as a feature film director. The screenplay was written by Leigh Whannell from a story he co-wrote with Wan. The film stars Cary Elwes, Danny Glover, Monica Porter, Michael Emerson, Ken Leung and Leigh Whannell himself.

The film’s plot follows a non-linear narrative and centers on the mysterious Jigsaw Killer, who subjects his victims to deadly “games” that challenge their will to survive by forcing them to endure excruciating physical pain. The main storyline revolves around Jigsaw’s newest captives, played by Whannell and Elwes, who wake up in a shabby bathroom. They are given a horrific ultimatum: one must kill the other to save his family.

The film was originally created in 2001, but challenges arose during production in Australia, and the creators headed to Los Angeles. To attract producers, they made a low-budget short film based on a scene from the script, which eventually caught the attention of Evolution Entertainment, who produced the film under the horror genre label Twisted Pictures. The production cost of “Saw” was not high, and it was shot in only 18 days.

The film premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and was released in North America by Lionsgate on October 29, 2004. Despite mixed reviews from critics, it was a huge commercial success, grossing $103.9 million at the global box office, cementing its status as one of the most profitable horror films since Scream (1996) status.

To commemorate its tenth anniversary, “Saw” was re-released in select theaters on October 31, 2014. The success of the film has spawned multiple sequels, among which “Saw X” is scheduled to be released in September 2023.

See 1 ending explained

In the first Saw movie, the story revolves around two protagonists: Adam Steinheit (played by Leigh Whannell) and Dr. Lawrence Gordon (played by Cary Elwes). They find themselves trapped in a filthy, abandoned bathroom, each with their ankles cuffed to a pipe. As they try to figure out how and why they got there, they discover clues left behind by their kidnapper, the notorious Jigsaw killer John Kramer (Tobin Bell).

Throughout the film, we are shown flashbacks of Jigsaw’s previous victims and his modus operandi. Jigsaw is not your typical horror movie killer; instead, he is an extremely intelligent and unhinged man who believes he is “teaching” people valuable life lessons through his sadistic games. His motivation is to make people appreciate life because he himself faced death due to a terminal illness.

As Adam and Dr. Gordon search for a way out, they also discover a lifeless body lying on the bathroom floor. As the tension builds, we begin to believe that this could be the body of their captor, Jigsaw. The two eventually find a bag containing two hacksaws, which they believe may be their ticket to freedom.

The twist ending comes when a lifeless body on the floor suddenly comes to life, revealing himself to be Jigsaw. This shocking reveal catches both the characters and the audience off guard. The real horror begins when the Jigsaw begin to explain the rules of their “game.”

Jigsaw tells Adam and Dr. Gordon that they are all part of his twisted plan. Dr. Gordon has until 6pm to find a way to kill Adam or Jigsaw will kill his family. Dr. Gordon has a choice – he can kill Adam to save his family, or try to find another way out of his predicament.

Adam, on the other hand, is also part of the game. He is also being tested, although his test is to appreciate life and not take it for granted. He could have retrieved a key from the tub drain to unlock the anklets, but he didn’t do it in time. When Adam attempted to attack Jigsaw, he was electrocuted by an anklet, rendering him powerless.

As the film approaches its climax, Dr. Gordon, desperate to save his family, finally decides to cut off his own foot with a hacksaw, sacrificing part of himself to escape and satisfy Jigsaw’s demands. In a shocking final scene, we see him crawl out of the bathroom, leaving Adam behind.

The film ends on a chilling note, with Jigsaw uttering the infamous “game over” line. Viewers are deeply aware that the real mastermind behind the twisted trap is still at large and the horror is far from over.

The ending of “Saw” is highly regarded for its unexpected twist and setting the tone for the rest of the series. It leaves viewers questioning Jigsaw’s morality and motivations while delivering an unforgettable and shocking conclusion that makes the film a classic of the horror genre.

saw plot twist

In the first Saw movie, the story revolves around two men: photographer Adam and oncologist Dr. Lawrence Gordon, who wake up in a shabby bathroom with their ankles chained to a pipe. Between them lay the body of a victim who had apparently committed suicide, holding a revolver and a miniature tape recorder.

A tape is found in everyone’s pocket and Adam retrieves the recorder. The tape presents them with a horrific choice: Adam must find a way to survive, and Gordon is instructed to kill Adam before 6 o’clock or his wife and daughter will be killed by the Jigsaw Killer.

Both men tried to cut their chains with a hacksaw, but Adam’s saw broke and Gordon realized the saw was used to cut off their feet. Gordon identifies their captor as the “Jigsaw Killer,” who places his victims in deadly traps known as “games” to test their will to survive. Gordon recognized the name because he had been a suspect in the Jigsaw case.

The film also shows a series of flashbacks that reveal events that occurred five months ago. When Detectives Tapp and Sheen found Gordon’s laptop at the crime scene, they questioned Gordon about his connection to Jigsaw. After Gordon was released, Tapp and Sheen found Jigsaw’s warehouse and confronted him, but Sheen was killed in the process.

Back in the present, Gordon’s wife and daughters Allison and Diana are imprisoned by Jigsaw and monitored via hidden cameras. Tapp, now obsessed with the Jigsaw case, watches the events unfold from a distance.

As tensions escalate, Gordon discovers a box containing two cigarettes, a lighter and a one-way mobile phone. He recalled being kidnapped in a parking lot by a man wearing a pig mask. Adam remembers his own kidnapping, when he found a puppet in a darkroom with a picture of Gordon inside.

Alison manages to call Gordon and warn him not to trust Adam. However, Adam revealed to Gordon that Tapp paid him to spy on him and knew about Gordon’s affair with one of his medical students, which was likely the reason for his kidnapping.

At six o’clock, Jigsaw’s accomplice Zep Hindle attempted to kill Alison and Diana, but was ultimately stopped by Tapp. Gordon, unaware of the situation outside, sawed off his own foot in desperation and shot Adam, thinking that he must follow Jigsaw’s instructions to save his family. However, it was revealed that Adam survived the shooting and bludgeoned Zep to death as he entered the bathroom to kill Gordon.

In a shocking twist, the lifeless body lying in the room rises and reveals itself to be the real Jigsaw killer, John Kramer. He tells Adam that the key to his anklet was in the bathtub and had been flushed down the drain when he first woke up. Adam attempts to shoot John, but is startled by his anklet, and John leaves the bathroom, sealing the door behind him, leaving Adam to die.

The movie ends with Gordon crawling out of the bathroom, leaving Adam alone with the chilling realization that the Jigsaw Killer is still at large. The first Saw was praised for its clever plot twists and intense psychological horror, laying the foundation for the successful series that followed.
