Author Walker drew inspiration from his own experiences moving from the suburbs to New York City during a period of heightened crime and drug problems in the late 1980s.

Fincher insisted on keeping the original film’s dark ending despite objections from studio executives who wanted a happier ending. The film was shot in Los Angeles on an estimated budget of $33-34 million.

Analysis of the seven endings

At the end of the movie Seven, Detectives Somerset and Mills are taken to a secluded location by serial killer John Doe, who promises to reveal the final two victims, who represent jealousy and rage. However, when they arrive, they find a delivery van with a package addressed to Mills.

Plot 7

“In the film Seven, retiring detective William Somerset teams up with young detective David Mills to solve a series of gruesome murders in their crime-ridden city. Each murder is based on one of the seven deadly sins.

As they investigate, they uncover more and more disturbing crimes, including a man forced to eat until his stomach bursts (gluttony), another man forced to cut off a pound of flesh (greed), and a drug dealer starved (laziness). Somerset and Mills form an uneasy partnership, with Somerset planning to retire soon.

Throughout the week, Somerset grows closer to Mills’ wife, Tracy, who confides in him her unhappiness in the city, especially after discovering she is pregnant. Meanwhile, they discover clues that point to a man named John Doe, who they suspect is the killer.

Doe is arrested, but he offers to lead them to the last two victims, claiming that he was chosen by God to punish sinners.

On the way to his destination, Doe reveals his true motives, admitting that he is jealous of Mills and Tracy’s lives. At the remote location, a package arrives containing Tracy’s severed head, confirming Doe’s twisted plan. Mills is enraged and kills Doe, fulfilling the killer’s plan. Somerset is left to deal with the aftermath, reflecting on the darkness of human nature but strengthening his resolve to fight for the good of the world.
