Shin Megami Tensei V: Should You Pick Apsaras or Leanan Sidhe?

In Shin Megami Tensei V, players are faced with a big choice at the very beginning: should they choose Apsaras or Leanan Sidhe? This guide will show you the best choice.

Should you choose Apsaras or Leanan Sidhe in Shin Megami Tensei V?

In Shin Megami Tensei V, if you have the choice of fighting alongside the Apsaras or the Leanan Sidhe, your best bet is to go with the Leanan Sidhe. You can only complete one of their subquests, and in the early stages of the game, completing the Leanan Sidhe subquest gives you more useful rewards.

Benefits of choosing Leanan Sidhe instead of Apsaras

If you side with Leanan Sidhe and complete her subquest “Water Nymph”, you will receive her as an Allied Demon and two (2) Stamina Incense items. If you side with Apsaras and complete the “Spirit of Love” subquest, you will receive Apsaras as an Allied Demon and two (2) Strength Incense items.

Apsaras has some immediate advantages as an ally, namely her ice magic: The first boss in the game, Hydra, is afraid of ice, and you will most likely complete one of the subquests before taking on her. However, you can acquire other ice-focused demons before fighting Hydra. Leanan Sidhe has the dark skill Mudo, which is ineffective against Hydra but deadly to many of the normal demons you’ll fight along the way. Leanan Sidhe also has the skill Media, which heals your entire squad. Early in the game, the only other way to get your entire squad healed is to get an Angel through Demon Fusion.

The items that Leanan Sidhe gives you for completing her subquests are also better than those from Apsaras. Apsaras’ Strength Incense will permanently increase a demon’s Strength by one (1) point, but physical demons usually gain Strength as they level up. The Stamina Incense provided by Leanan Sidhe will permanently increase a demon’s maximum MP. This is much rarer and more valuable, as a demon’s MP does not increase as it levels up.

While it’s more advantageous to side with Leanan Sidhe, you can get both Apsaras and Leanan Sidhe later through Demon Fusion.

How to activate Leanan Sidhe’s sub-quest “Water Fairy”

To activate the “Water Fairy” subquest, find Leanan Sidhe in a small alcove in Shiba Park and speak with her. Agree to her request, then find Apsaras on the cliffs south of Shiba.

You can choose to complete Leanan Sidhe’s request or listen to Apsaras. This will give you the opportunity to accept her subquest “Spirit of Love”. If you want to choose Leanan Sidhe, challenge Apsaras to a battle here.

After defeating the Apsaras, report back to Leanan Sidhe at the place where you first found her. She will reward you with Stamina Incense and join your demon team. If you don’t have a slot to give her, she will wait in the same location. Come back when you have a slot to talk to her and she will join you.

Battle Apsara

When you begin fighting Apsaras, she will be accompanied by three (3) Agathion demons. The Agathions can use their skill Dia to heal each other, or worse, Apsaras, so defeat them first. They are weak to Ice skills, so bring Azumi or Mermaid along. Asparas will not block Ice damage directly, so you can attack freely using Mermaid’s Stormcaller Song skill.

Mermaid is a particularly useful choice because she’s immune to ice, which means she’ll take away pressure turns from Apsaras when she targets her with an ice skill. Your other teammates may take damage from Apsaras, though, so bring along Pixie or Angel to heal.

Apsaras are not afraid of fire, so you can have Onmoraki follow this fight for extra damage. Another option is to use the Fire Skill Agi that Onmoraki Essence teaches you on one of your demons (or Nahobino, if you plan on crafting a magic kit for him).

What happens if you talk to the Apsaras first?

You will most likely activate the “Spirit of Love” subquest before reaching the Leanan Sidhe in the Underworld. If you previously started the “Black Panther’s Dilemma” subquest, the black panther you need to find is near the Apsaras, which are marked on the world map with a glowing subquest scroll.

It’s tempting to head straight to Apsaras and activate the Spirit of Love, especially if this is your first time playing Shin Megami Tensei V and you’re not looking forward to the options later on. If you activate the Spirit of Love but want to side with Leanan Sidhe, don’t worry. When you reach Leanan Sidhe, you can choose to “Talk to Her” instead of “Fulfill Apsaras’ Request.” From there you can accept the “Water Fairy” subquest, return to Apsaras, and challenge her. The only thing that changes depending on who you talk to first is the amount of dialogue for each demon.

If you change your mind and do want to help the Apsaras after all, you can challenge her even after agreeing to help Leanan Sidhe. The subquest you complete depends on which demon you choose to fight. You will always receive a warning before making your final choice on either subquest.

Use other demons to fill the flying holes in your fortress

Demon fusion to obtain flying

As mentioned before, you can obtain Apsaras through demon fusion after completing “Water Goddess”. The following table lists some of the early demons you can fuse to obtain Apsaras.

Devil 1 Devil 2
Mokoi Aubalion
Mokoi Preta
Sandman Aubalion
Kate Heath Tuyun
Halfafus Aubalion

Shin Megami Tensei V: Early Demons Fused into Apsaras

But at this stage in the game, you also get other ice-based demons that are just as strong as, or even stronger than, the Apsaras, and one of them is particularly useful against the Apsaras.

Mermaid

Mermaid is an Ice Demon that you can obtain by fusion or by talking to the demon in the Akabane Bridge area in the lake area southwest of the Tokyo Tower Leyline. Her unique skill, Stormcaller Song, randomly deals three (3) to six (6) weak Ice damage to all enemies, which is very effective against the first major boss in the game, the Hydra. She is also immune to Ice damage, making her a useful ally when fighting Apsaras.

Niami Niami

Nyami Nyami is one of the many new demons in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. He can be obtained by fusing the Crow Halphas of Azumabu with any of the following:

  • Kodama, a flying flat friend found in Shiba,
  • Or the terrifying enemy crab “Tsuchigumo” in Shiba Park.

What makes Nyami Nyami so powerful is his unique skill, Ice Dragon Spiral. It’s an ice move that ignores the enemy’s ice resistance. This is generally a great skill, as accidentally hitting an enemy’s immunity can cause you to lose a casting turn, thus losing the entire battle. Even better, this skill can also break Mitama’s immunity. Rare Mitama enemies have random immunities each time, but provide amazing rewards when defeated. You can use Ice Dragon Spiral without fear and defeat them in one hit.

When all is said and done, you can still choose to side with the Apsaras and defeat the Leanan Sidhe. Check out the rest of our guides for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance to best prepare for whatever the game throws at you, no matter which demon you add to your roster.
